Heard Museum

Heard Museum The Heard Museum connects Indigenous creativity to the world by presenting the voice and vision of American Indian artists.

Since its founding in 1929, the Heard Museum, a private nonprofit organization, has grown in size and stature to become recognized internationally for the quality of its collections, world class exhibitions, educational programming and unmatched festivals. It consists of 12 galleries featuring American Indian art and exhibitions, an outdoor sculpture gallery, a world-class museum shop and an outdo

or café. Dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art, the Heard successfully presents the stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective as well as exhibitions that showcase the beauty and vitality of traditional and contemporary art. The Heard Museum is supported, in part, by the generosity of Heard Museum members and donors, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, and the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture.

“Honoring the American Indian Veteran is an integral part of Indian Lore throughout Indian Country. Two things are true: We honor the elderly, and we honor veterans.”
— Dr. George Blue Spruce (Laguna/Ohkay Owingeh)

Today on , we honor and remember with gratitude for the service and sacrifice by members of the American Armed Forces. 🇺🇸

This carving by Lorenzo Reed (Navajo) represents two Navajo Code Talkers and is signed by four. The Navajo Code Talkers used their Native language to communicate military information during World War II. Other Native servicemen, including Hopi and Comanche soldiers, also served in this capacity during the war.

Today we honor the life and legacy of Rainy Naha (Hopi-Tewa, 1949-2026).

Known for her hand-coiled and often white ware pottery with intricate polychrome designs, Rainy Naha carried forward Hopi-Tewa traditions while incorporating her own creative voice and vision.

She left a lasting impact on the art community and generously shared her skills with us at the Heard Museum Guild's Indian Fair + Market as a recipient of several Juried Competition awards over the years.

Her work brings profound beauty into the world, and we're grateful it's part of the Heard Museum's permanent collection where it can continue to inspire visitors and fellow artists alike.
