Horse-Craft bell boots are now available from Florida Farrier Service. They are easiest to put on at your shoeing appointment and we are happy to do that for you.
Good quality, sturdy bell boots are your farrier’s best friend. Especially if your horse tends to over-reach, a pair of bell boots can greatly reduce shoe loss. Make sure that they’re properly fitted, though. When your horse is standing on flat ground or pavement, the back of the bell boots should touch the ground, covering the heels of the shoe.
In an article from March 2017 in the Horse Journal magazine it speaks of the benefits.
“When it comes to preventative measures, bell boots can’t be overlooked or underestimated. A horse that doesn’t overreach can still inadvertently catch himself when playing, and a front shoe that is ripped off can damage the hoof. Although the consistent use of bell boots can certainly reduce the risk of an injury from the horse grabbing himself, they’re not a cure for bad movers or forgers.”
“Pull-ons are still your most economical choice - and the only way to go when you absolutely can’t risk a boot coming off - but they remain buggers to apply and remove. They also are often your best bet if you’re frequently working in mud or water.”
We know this will not work for every horse and will not eliminate shoe loss, however following this easy protocol can reduce the amount of lost shoes. After all, every time your horse pulls a shoe more nail holes have to be added to apply a new one. The reduction of nail holes alone, is a bonus.
