Sean Avery

Rapper. Poet. Educator. They/Them. Sean Avery is both a performance and teaching artist, both a rapper and poet. Raised in Avondale, Arizona, Sean received a B.A.

in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison while on full-tuition scholarship from First-Wave, the country’s only collegiate Hip-Hop theater program. They use their experience as a Black demiboy to open a dialogue where others can discuss their identities as well, coming together in community for listening, learning, educating, & expressing. In their work, the presentation of otherness is as theatrical as it feels.

I'm honored to have a verse (poem) on Gorgeous Jefe's new album "JIHAD OF THE SOUL," for the song "Thank God 4 Black Music."

This song is special because it encapsulates a conversation I often have with Jefe about our power, position, and potency as Black musicians in AZ. It also attempts to pay homage to a massive lineage of Black music by shouting out the powerhouses of our (Black) culture. Shoutout Alex, and everyone involved in the making of this project, which is a bold statement challenging the AZ rap ecosystem in both necessary and exciting ways.

Let's get it. I had actually given up on MFA programs after about six rejections over the course of two years. Then I took a chance on Randolph, and it turns out that they want to take a chance on me, too.

Shoutout everyone who wrote me a letter of recommendation, helped with my application materials, and kept encouraging me.

This next stage is going to be wonderfully exciting and inspiring. I'm geeked to meet my cohort and mentors!
