This weekend, the Piestewa Fallen Heroes Memorial Ceremony will take place at Piestewa Peak on March 23, as it does each year, to honor and remember Arizona’s fallen heroes.

Named in memory of Army Spc. Lori Ann Piestewa, the peak serves as a lasting tribute to her sacrifice. Lori was a 23-year-old Hopi mother of two from Tuba City, Arizona, who gave her life in service during the Iraq War. She was the first documented American female casualty of the war and the first known Native American woman to die in combat.

If you’re able to attend, this is a powerful way to show support and gratitude for those who have given everything in service to our country.

The Piestewa Fallen Heroes Memorial Ceremony is held at Piestewa Peak on March 23 each year and focuses on remembering all Arizona Fallen Heroes.

Today, as we honor the sacrifices and courage of our veterans, we invite you to join artist Jim Covarrubias at the Heard Museum, where he will be painting in the courtyard throughout the day. At 5 pm, there will be a special sunset tribute honoring American Indian Veterans.

As we reflect on the sacrifices made by those who serve, let us hold in our hearts a collective hope for peace- peace within our homeland and peace for our service members who continue to serve abroad. May the guiding principles of our nation sustain their courage and strength wherever they are.

Today, we remember, we honor, and we hope for a world where peace prevails. 🇺🇸
