URGENT: The Future of Music in the Rogue Valley is on the Line
Currently, the arts ecosystem in Southern Oregon faces an unprecedented threat. As many of you know, Southern Oregon University is dealing with a serious financial crisis. To obtain emergency state funding, an outside consulting firm has recommended up to $20 million in large-scale cuts across the university. Among the programs on the chopping block? The SOU Music Department.
I cannot emphasize enough how devastating this loss would be to our region. The SOU Music Department is more than just a campus program; it is the vital core of our local arts scene. It trains the music educators who teach our children, nurtures performers who appear on our community stages, and supplies the artistic energy that makes the Rogue Valley so lively and vibrant.
Sunsetting this program will not only damage SOU’s reputation—its effects will reach far beyond the campus and permanently alter our community's cultural landscape.
The SOU Board of Trustees is set to vote on this plan in just 48 hours, on Friday, May 8. We cannot stay on the sidelines. We need to be part of the solution and press the Board to imagine a future for SOU that includes the arts.
Here is how you can help right now:
· ATTEND THE TOWN HALL TONIGHT: Join us tonight (Wednesday, May 6) from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Medford Public Library for a community forum moderated by John Frohnmayer. Show up and voice your support. Jerron Jorgensen will be there at 7:00 PM to lead SOU choir students in a powerful rendition of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” Let's fill the room.
· WRITE TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES: They don't need more financial data; they need to hear about the human impact. Write a personal plea to the board before Friday’s vote. Share what local music, the Chorale, and SOU's artistic presence have meant to your life and your family. They need to face the reality of what will be lost.
When we cut music education, we lose the spaces where our youth learn teamwork, problem-solving, and true confidence. Let’s unite to keep music alive.
