Two spouts, one handle, and a reason.

The wedding vase is a Native American form. Two people drink from the same vessel, one spout each, and the handle joins them. This one is hand painted and certified Native made, and the card comes with it.

It is the piece people buy for somebody else and then keep.

Wedding gift, or is that too on the nose? πŸ‘‡

When summer leans on Globe, folks don't fight it. They climb.

The Pinal Mountains rise straight out of the desert behind town and top out at 7,848 feet at Pinal Peak. Ponderosa pine and white fir up there, and it runs a good ten to fifteen degrees cooler than the floor of the valley. The CCC worked these slopes in the thirties and their stonework is still standing.

HOW TO GET THERE
From Globe, head south toward the Pinal Mountains on Icehouse Canyon Road or Sixshooter Canyon Road. The forest road up to Pinal Peak is unpaved and steep in places. Check conditions before you commit, and it does get snow in winter.

TIPS
Pack a jacket even in July. Cell service goes away fast. The Ice House CCC site is the trailhead for Telephone Trail.

DID YOU KNOW?
Same reason then as now. People have been coming up here to get out of the heat for a hundred years.

Yard art that can take an Arizona summer.

Cut and hand painted metal on a stake, built to live outside in it. Monsoon wind, 115 in July, the whole year of it. Push it into the gravel and leave it.

Small thing worth knowing: this kind of piece reads best from inside the house looking out. That is where you actually see it every day.

Where would this go in your yard? πŸ‘‡

People fly in from Germany and Japan to drive a road that runs through here.

Arizona kept more of the Mother Road than any other state, and the longest unbroken stretch left anywhere runs Seligman to Topock. Seligman, Peach Springs, Hackberry, Kingman.

Caps for the drive, and for the wall after.

Have you driven the Arizona stretch, or is it still on the list? πŸ‘‡

Morning coffee at Woods Canyon Lake, up on the Mogollon Rim.

Ponderosa pine, still water, and about thirty degrees knocked off the valley.

It sits near 7,500 feet, which is the whole point of driving up here in August. The lake is small and the loop trail around it is easy enough for anybody.

The beadwork takes the longest.

Deer skin, fur, feathers, and bead rows that outlast every other stage of the build in hours spent. Handmade by a tribal artist and certified as such β€” the tag names who made it.

The Salado built this pueblo about eight hundred years ago, a mile outside what is now Globe.

Roughly 200 rooms on a ridge above Pinal Creek. They farmed this valley and lived here. Some of the walls are still standing, and you can walk among them.

HOW TO GET THERE
Besh-Ba-Gowah Archaeological Park is just southwest of downtown Globe. From Phoenix, US-60 east about 90 miles.

TIPS
Check current hours before you go. There is a museum on site with pottery recovered from the pueblo. Give yourself time and walk it quietly.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Salado built here between about 1225 and 1400. The name Besh-Ba-Gowah came much later, from Apache, and means place of metal.

Three pieces, three stories, one shelf.

A wedding vase with its two spouts and single handle, a buffalo pot, and a bowl painted with a night camp. All Cedar Mesa Pottery, all hand painted, all certified Native made.

The wedding vase is the one people ask about. Two spouts, two people, one vessel.

Which of the three would you take home? πŸ‘‡

The souvenir that earns its shelf space by never being on the shelf.

Steel, flip top, and Arizona spelled out in the places it is named for. Grand Canyon, saguaro country, red rock, a meadowlark in the middle of it.

It goes in the car and stays there, which is the whole point.

Where would this ride with you? πŸ‘‡

Coffee at Dobbins Lookout, on top of South Mountain.

The whole valley wakes up underneath you from up here, and nobody says a word about it.

You can drive all the way to the top, so this one is for everybody, not just the hikers. Go early, before the sun clears the ridge and while the city is still blue.
