It's your LAST CHANCE to experience Eric Fischl: Stories Told at Phoenix Art Museum. Closing June 14, this powerful exhibition brings together 40 large-scale works by renowned figurative painter Eric Fischl (), tracing his career from the late 1970s to today.

Raised in both Long Island and Phoenix, Fischl studied at Phoenix College and Arizona State University before becoming one of the most influential figurative painters of his generation. Stories Told explores the complexities beneath everyday life — family dynamics, social tensions, memory, masculinity, privilege, and the uneasy spaces between public and private life — through emotionally charged, deeply human scenes.

This exhibition also celebrates Fischl’s lasting connection to Phoenix and his impact on the local arts community through decades of mentorship and philanthropy. Don’t miss your chance to see this extraordinary exhibition before it closes.

On view June 13 | Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller: The Instrument of Troubled Dreams

Experience Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller’s acclaimed interactive audio installation, on view in Arizona for the first time.

Born in small rural towns in Canada, artists Janet Cardiff (b. 1957) and George Bures Miller (b. 1960) have collaborated for more than three decades, developing a singular practice rooted in sound, storytelling, and immersive installation. Working with film, robotics, and advanced audio technologies, their work blurs the boundaries between memory and narrative, inviting viewers into shifting worlds where space, time, and perception are constantly in flux.

In The Instrument of Troubled Dreams, visitors are invited to take a seat at a modified 1960s Mellotron keyboard and become active participants in the work itself. Each of the instrument’s 72 keys triggers a distinct sound, musical fragment, or spoken narrative—from a raven crossing the gallery to soldiers searching an apartment to a carnival drifting past on a barge.

As visitors improvise, they construct their own evolving audio landscapes—composing fragmented, cinematic narratives that shift with every interaction. The result is an experience that is at once intimate and expansive, structured and unpredictable, echoing the unstable nature of memory itself.

Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller: The Instrument of Troubled Dreams marks the artists’ second presentation at Phoenix Art Museum and the Arizona premiere of this major interactive work.

Join us for a special screening of the silent-era masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc, one of cinema’s most transcendent and emotionally powerful works, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer.

Spiritual rapture and institutional hypocrisy come to stark, vivid life in one of the most transcendent masterpieces of the silent era. Chronicling the trial of Joan of Arc in the hours leading up to her ex*****on, Danish master Carl Theodor Dreyer depicts her torment with startling immediacy, employing an array of techniques—expressionistic lighting, interconnected sets, painfully intimate close-ups—to immerse viewers in her subjective experience. Anchoring Dreyer’s audacious formal experimentation is a legendary performance by Renée Falconetti, whose haunted face channels both the agony and the ecstasy of martyrdom.

🍿 We're thrilled to now offer concessions! Grab your favorite movie snacks, including popcorn, soda, and candy, to enjoy during the film.

📅 Date: Wednesday, May 20
🕛 Time: 6 pm
📍 Location: Whiteman Hall at Phoenix Art Museum

How can photography preserve the stories our bodies carry?

Join us for In Conversation: Muscle Memory, where curator Emilia Mickevicius sits down with artists Claire A. Warden, Marcus Chormicle, and Mehrdad Mirzaie. Inspired by Muscle Memory: Lens on the Body, this conversation will explore how each artist uses photography to document strength, vulnerability, and the passage of time.

From intimate, everyday moments to larger narratives of identity and migration, their work reveals how the body becomes an archive—holding experiences that shape who we are. Together, they’ll reflect on the camera’s ability to capture what is subtle, fleeting, and deeply human.
