The art deco era wasn't all glitz and glamor, while a modern way of life was being showcased new public safety standards were still being created and scandals were still reported nationally.

The "Century of Progress" fair may have been celebrating a shiny new future but some guests left with more than souvenirs. More than 1,000 cases of dysentery were associated with the fair from June to November. The outbreak was finally brought to an end by the Chicago Bureau of Sanitary Engineering when they discovered defective plumbing permitted sewage to contaminate drinking water in two adjacent hotels.

In the depths of the Great Depression June 1933, Chicago opened the gates to the future. The "Century of Progress" World’s Fair dazzled visitors celebrating science, innovation and modern design. Bringing hope during this time of hardship with the message that science, technology and modern design will lead us to a brighter future. This fair became one of the great showcases of American Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architecture with glowing Art Deco towers, neon lights, futuristic homes, and even rocket-shaped cars soaring above the fairgrounds on the Sky Ride.

The future was on display… and it was spectacular.
