Before the iconic contour bottle, Coca-Cola never touched glass at all. For its first eight years, it existed only as a soda-fountain drink — you couldn't take it home.
Everything changed on March 12, 1894. Joseph Biedenharn, a candy store owner in Vicksburg, Mississippi, began bottling Coca-Cola in old Hutchinson bottles. He shipped a case to company boss Asa Candler, who shrugged it off and stuck with fountain sales.
Five years later, Candler sold the national bottling rights for a single dollar — money he reportedly never even collected. The world-famous contour bottle wouldn't appear until 1915, two decades later.
