The Milky Way you often see on the internet... is just a simulation.

The Solar System sits about 27,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way, inside a galaxy that spans roughly 100,000 to 200,000 light-years across and contains around 100 to 400 billion stars.

The catch? We are living right inside it.

That is why, to this day, humanity has never taken a single complete photo of the entire Milky Way from the outside. Those beautiful spiral images you always see are actually reconstructions built from data—mapping stars, cosmic dust, radio signals, infrared light, and the movements of billions of celestial bodies.

Think about it:

We have put humans on the Moon, 384,000 km away.

We have sent the Voyager spacecraft over 24 billion km away from Earth.

We have gazed at galaxies billions of light-years away.

But the very galaxy we call home? We still have to piece together fragments of data just to imagine what it looks like.

You can look up at the night sky. You can see thousands of stars. You can see a fraction of the Milky Way.

You just have never seen the entirety of the place you live in.

On June 1, 2026, Kīlauea volcano on the Island of Hawaiʻi made history.
Its ongoing summit eruption in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has now produced 48 fountaining episodes—surpassing the previous record set by Puʻuʻōʻō eruption in the 1980s (47 fountaining episodes).
With no signs of this eruption slowing, Kīlauea will continue to rewrite the record books with every new episode.
🎥: USGS photos/videos of lava fountaining episodes 28, 38, and 34.

THE JUNE BOOTIDS METEOR SHOWER RETURNS ON JUNE 27. 🌠✨

Get ready for a quiet but beautiful night under the stars as the June Bootids Meteor Shower brings fleeting streaks of light across the sky.

Unlike some major meteor showers, the June Bootids can be unpredictable — sometimes soft and subtle, sometimes surprisingly active. That mystery is part of what makes it so special. You never know when a bright meteor might suddenly cut across the darkness and disappear in seconds.

For the best chance to see it, find a place away from city lights, let your eyes adjust to the dark, and look up patiently. A clear sky, a calm night, and a little time are all you need.

On June 27, the universe may give us a few golden sparks across the night — brief, beautiful reminders that the sky is never truly still.

🌌 Mark your calendar.
🌠 Watch the sky.
✨ Don’t miss this late-June meteor moment.
