Hannah Spiegelman of A Sweet History will discuss her research on three historic landscapes of ice cream consumption in 19th century America: the pleasure garden, the ice cream parlor, and the soda fountain. These exclusive spaces conveyed ideals formed in European spa culture such as pastoralism, escapism, health, and leisure. By looking at newspaper clippings, trade cards, and caricatures, a picture emerges of the ice cream institutions that enforced gender, class, and race norms in growing metropolises, and how American ice cream culture was born.
