Drexel Hindu Student Association

The purpose of the Drexel Hindu Student Association is to explore the qualities and uniqueness of the Hindu Religion.

Drexel's Hindu Student Association aims to celebrate Hindu festivals while also emphasizing the meaning behind them. Our goal is to encourage good relations between people who identify with worldly religions, the community at large, and the city of Philadelphia. HSA conducts social, cultural, religious, and various other activities during the academic year.

Today, we celebrate Maha Shivaratri, in reverence of the Hindu god Lord Shiva.

Known as the ‘great night of lord Shiva’, it is believed to be the night when the formless god revealed his lingam form. Lord Shiva was also married to the goddess Parvati on this day, and it is thought this is when he first performed the Tandava Nritya, the dance of primordial creation, preservation, and destruction.

While some celebrate the festival of Mahashivratri during the day, others observe it during the night with a series of ‘jagraans’ (night-long celebrations filled with prayer ceremonies and religious hymns).

On this day, we encourage all to worship Lord Shiva with true devotion for strength, honor, and bravery, and so we may be freed of all sins and blessed with moksha (freedom from the eternal cycle of life and death).

As Navratri comes to a close, we would like to wish everyone a happy Vijayadashami or Dussehra! Derived from the Sanskrit words ‘dasha’ (meaning ten) and ‘hara’ (meaning defeat), Dussehra celebrates the triumph of good over evil: the Hindu god Rama’s victory over Ravana, the ten-headed demon king, and the victory of the goddess Durga over Mahishasura.

We encourage you on this auspicious day of Dussehra to remain steadfast in all your endeavors and pursuits. This occasion reminds us that those who are good and virtuous will always emerge victorious, so let us continue to learn and be our best selves.

Stay tuned for an exciting announcement from HSA soon… :)
