Calder’s standing mobile "Tree" has been installed in the Small Gallery at Calder Gardens.

In this remarkable work, a delicate mobile of wood, glass, mirror, and plastic elements is suspended from an eight-foot-tall sheet metal base. Calder often incorporated everyday materials into his sculptures, and in a 1950s interview he reflected: “[A found object] only works if you find something as good as the shape you were about to invent.” Calder collected one of the mobile’s hanging elements, a red plastic shard, from a shattered car taillight.

Something new has arrived at Calder Gardens. 🌀

Three works by Alexander Calder, "Red Panel", "Tree", and “Tines", are now on view as part of the latest rotation of works throughout the galleries.

Rotating installations are part of the experience at Calder Gardens, bringing different works from across Calder’s career into the spaces and creating new relationships with the architecture, gardens, and other works around them. With each change, there’s another reason to return and experience the galleries differently.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll take a closer look at each of these newly installed works and share more about their stories.

For now, come experience the new rotation for yourself.

Garden Walks offer a closer look at the landscape of Calder Gardens and everything that goes into bringing Piet Oudolf’s vision to life. 🌿

Led through the gardens, these 45-minute walks explore more than what’s currently in bloom. You’ll discover the ideas behind Oudolf’s planting philosophy, the structure and texture that shape the landscape throughout the seasons, and the practical layers of planning and care happening beneath the surface.

Along the way, you’ll also consider how the living landscape interacts with Calder’s art and the architecture of Calder Gardens, creating relationships that continue to change throughout the year.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to see what has changed, Garden Walks offer a deeper way to experience the garden and the intentionality woven throughout it.

One year of Calder Gardens! 🌀

A year ago, we opened our doors and invited you to experience a new home for Calder’s work in Philadelphia. Since then, Calder Gardens has continued to change with every visit.

Across the galleries, rotating installations have placed works from throughout Calder’s 50-year career in conversation with one another and with the architecture of Herzog & de Meuron. Outside, Piet Oudolf’s gardens have moved through their first full cycle of seasons, from new growth and summer color to autumn seed heads, winter structure, and growth beginning again. Through programs like Moon Alignment and Artists as Gardens, artists, musicians, thinkers, and visitors have gathered here for concerts, conversations, meditation, and moments of reflection.

Thank you to everyone who visited, returned, brought someone new, attended a program, became a member, or simply spent time with us during this first year!

There is still so much to come, and so much left open to interpretation.

There’s often more than one thing in motion at Calder Gardens.

A mobile shifts overhead, responding to the air around it. Its shadow moves across the wall, becoming another composition alongside the sculpture itself. Nearby, “Sword Plant” holds a very different kind of balance in red and black.

Together, the works offer two expressions of Calder’s ongoing experiments with movement, equilibrium, space, and chance. Spend a little time here and the relationships between them keep changing, especially as you move through the gallery.

Next week, the installation at Calder Gardens will shift. The current installation of works will be on view until Monday, 7 September.

Some conversations with art begin with a question.

Walks at Calder Gardens offer a closer way to spend time with Calder’s work, the architecture, and the gardens. In small groups of no more than 10, specially trained guides lead 45-minute experiences through the galleries and landscape, making space for close-looking, conversation, and the perspectives everyone brings with them.

Rather than a traditional tour, each walk is shaped by what unfolds along the way. A mobile might shift overhead. A view into Piet Oudolf’s gardens might change the conversation. A work you’ve passed before might hold your attention differently this time.

Whether it’s your first visit or you’re returning, Walks at Calder Gardens offer another way into the relationship between art, architecture, nature, and well-being.

Sometimes the best way to understand the scale of Calder’s work is to stand beside it.

In the galleries, towering sheet metal forms share space with mobiles suspended overhead, with architecture and visitors moving between them. From one vantage point, a sculpture can fill your entire field of view. From another, it becomes part of a much larger composition unfolding across the space.

Out in the Vestige Garden, Calder’s sculptures share space with shifting sunlight, passing clouds, and plantings that look different from week to week. The work stays put, but everything around it keeps moving.

On a summer afternoon, that means blue skies overhead, shadows stretching across the ground, and Piet Oudolf’s landscape growing in every direction. Plan your visit to Calder Gardens in Philadelphia ➡️ https://bit.ly/4e0AWUC

There’s always more than one way to experience Calder Gardens.

From above, Calder’s works begin to overlap, creating combinations that change depending on where you’re standing. Walk downstairs and the same sculptures meet you at an entirely different scale. Move across the gallery and the relationships shift again.

The building creates these changing vantage points throughout the galleries, offering unexpected views of Calder’s work and the people spending time with it. Which way will you wander?

The Moon Alignment Series continues August 27 with a gathering during the full moon and lunar eclipse. 🌕

Held each month during the new and full moons, the series follows the recurring alignment of the sun, moon, and earth as a framework for contemplative practice. This month, that rhythm coincides with a lunar eclipse, bringing another dimension to the relationship between our closest celestial neighbors.

Led by Calder Gardens Contemplative Arts Fellow Isha Strasser, the session begins with a brief discussion before moving through walking meditation, silent meditation, and closing reflections. Together, these practices create time to consider motion and stillness through both individual reflection and shared experience.
