Philadelphia Zoo

Philadelphia Zoo Philadelphia Zoo is home to 1,900 animals, many rare and endangered. Check our website for hours.

Situated on 42 acres of beautiful gardens, the Philadelphia Zoo is home to nearly 1,700 animals, many rare and endangered. Gorillas, African lions, Amur tigers, a white rhino, giraffes and more call this oasis home. As Philadelphia’s leading cultural destination the Zoo boasts award-winning exhibits such as Zoo360, KidZooU, Big Cats Falls, McNeil Avian Center, and PECO Primate Reserve. Zoo360 is a

one of a kind animal exploration system that allows small primates, great apes, big cats and now meerkats to travel and discover the Zoo’ s campus. KidZooU: Hamilton Family Children’s Zoo & Faris Family Education Center offers displays and hands-on learning along with and rare and unusual goats, sheep, chickens, mini horses and ducks for toddlers to tweens. KidZooU changes the Zoo experience for both animals and guests alike. The outdoor exhibit area includes a 400-foot trail for rare sheep and goats, and a “goat bridge” built above the KidZooU entrance. While the goats scale their own supersize tower, children can climb a parallel structure. Indoors, families will marvel at a world teeming with coral reef fish, colorful parakeets, desert ants, and other extraordinary animals. Interactive exhibits show visitors how saving energy and recycling can help save wildlife. By connecting people with wildlife, the Philadelphia Zoo creates joyful discovery and inspires action for animals and habitats. As the region’s leading family destination, the Zoo welcomed more than 1.2 million visitors last year and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. We're just days away from the first-look opening of Carey Bear Country! 🐻 Carey Bear Country not only provides our Andean and sloth bears with fully upgraded and brand-new habitats, but supports our conservation work abroad to protect these species.

In India, we work with Wildlife SOS, an organization with the goal to make a lasting change to protect and conserve the country’s natural heritage, forest and biodiversity. Part of their work is managing Agra Bear Rescue, the largest facility of its kind in the world that cares for more than 80 rescued sloth bears.

In Ecuador, we work with Amaru Bioparque Cuenca - Zoológico, an organization that not only protects threatened amphibians, but provides significant support to Andean bear conservation efforts. Today, they are caring for eight rescued Andean bears, and are providing support to a wild bear monitoring program using camera traps and satellite technology to track the movements of Andean bears in real time.

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

Wood turtles are native to Pennsylvania and are also among the state’s greatest conservation concerns. Watch two of our Reptile and Amphibian animal care specialists process a wood turtle just as they would in the field during a survey!
