After a sold-out run last week @‌paintedbrideac, we’re still not ready to leave “The Becoming” behind. Here the legendary Germaine Ingram — lawyer, professor, tap dancer, choreographer, oral historian and Shavon Norris’ collaborator on this project — shares a bit more about its connection to a legacy of Black womanhood.

The Becoming arrives at Painted Bride Project Space this fall for three performances following its originally scheduled ArtPhilly presentation in June. Rooted in memory, storytelling, embodiment, and collective care, the project invites Black female-identifying Philadelphians into a communal process exploring Black girlhood, adulthood, ritual, and lived experience.

The Becoming is coming! Originally planned to debut in June during , this immersive gallery experience was postponed. Now you have several chances to take in Shavon Norris (Me+Jesus+Prince+Picard+Bronx) and collaborator Germaine Ingram’s meditation on aging and Black girlhood at the Painted Bride (Painted Bride). The work — which can be experienced both during gallery hours and in scheduled performances — blends movement, installation, testimony, and participatory exchange. Originally slated for presentation last June during What Now: 2026, The Becoming arrives at Painted Bride this fall.

An immersive and oral history experience by Shavon Norris (Me+Jesus+Prince+Picard+Bronx), the project invited four Black female-identifying Philadelphians, ages 13 to 39, into a communal process of interviews, portraits, rediscovered rituals, and song. The result is a living exhibition of listening booths and storytelling.

CAST ANNOUNCEMENT! Playwright, actor, and professor Anna Deavere Smith is bringing a piece of her family history to the stage of the Wilma Theater on June 26, 27 & 28.

Basil Biggs traces the life story of her great-great-grandfather, a farmer, veterinarian, and prominent Gettysburg figure. We are thrilled to announce the star-studded cast. Get to know your festival. What Now: 2026 is built around five Festival Districts, each one rooted in the neighborhoods that make this city what it is. Today we're heading to the Old City.

Old City is a place where the past and the present connect, where you can walk out of an 18th century historic site and into a cutting-edge restaurant that just happens to be housed in a 19th century storefront. That glorious chronological confusion will continue during What Now: 2026: The neighborhood will host contemporary musicians at a museum dedicated to the Revolutionary War and a waterfront reflection on the connection between Colonial-era slavery and anti-trans violence.
