"I loved being in Philly — I got to take my time to explore the kind of work that I wanted to do. And I met a lot of artists who were similar. They wanted to figure out their aesthetic, their point of view. I love the texture of the work that gets made in Philadelphia." — Tania Isaac, Curatorial Director at ArtPhilly

WHAT NOW: 2026 will draw on the revolutionary spirit of our history — after all, Philadelphia has been causing a scene since 1776. 🎆 It will celebrate the city’s neighborhoods and the surrounding region, showcase its diversity, and tease out the threads that run through the city’s culture. It will proudly announce that Philadelphia is equal parts Barnes and Bartrams, Old City and Kensington, cheesesteaks, and pepper pot. Whether it’s the music we create, the food we share, or the murals that bring life and color to our streets — the arts are alive in Philly. Through What Now: 2026’s widespread programming, creators’ voices will be foregrounded, placing artists, neighborhoods and arts organizations at the center of critical civic dialogue on the country’s past, present, and– most importantly– our future.

History and art are integral to Philadelphia’s identity. What Now weaves these legacies together by commissioning artists to interpret the complexities of this anniversary.
