Join us on Sunday, May 3rd from 11:00am–5:00pm for a day of fun for the whole family!

Children’s Day, traditionally celebrated on May 5th in Japan, is a national holiday honoring children and expressing hope for their happy, healthy future. Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia commemorates Children’s Day each year at the Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center with displays of traditional items associated with the holiday, including miniature Japanese samurai armor sets and festive fish-shaped streamers (koinobori) in the garden.

Along with the traditional decorations there will be activities throughout the day, including papercrafts such as making origami, koinobori (koi fish) origami kabuto (wearable paper samurai helmets), and paper fans. There will also be kimono dressing for boys and girls, Kamishibai storytellers, a performance by the Keystone Japan Club and a Samurai Fighting Arts demonstration by Master Takaharu Fukuzawa with Yasuyo Fukuzawa.

The Yoshino Cherry Trees have started to bloom! After being delayed by the cold snap this weekend, the warm weather today has finally opened up their buds. We had hoped they would be open for the festival two days ago, but Mother Nature's schedule doesn't always match with ours. Fortunately the pink Okame and weeping cherries, both in and around the Horticulture Center, showed off their lovely blooms.

The good news is this delayed bloom will give you another 2 weeks to enjoy Hanami picnics beneath the beautiful cherry trees. Peak bloom will be over the next few days, and will continue through next week. For a map of where to see the trees in Fairmount Park, and a history of the Sakura Centennial, visit our website at: https://japanphilly.org/programs/festivals/cherry-trees/

We want to give our sincerest thanks to everyone who braved the chilly winds this weekend to attend the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival. It is your love of and enthusiasm for Japanese Culture that makes this event so special, and we hope to see you next year on April 3rd and 4th, 2027!

Good morning Philadelphia! It's Sakura Sunday at the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival, and we have another great day in store for you. Temps will be 60 and Sunny with a light breeze, perfect weather after yesterday's chill.

We have a notice for a change in Accessible Access to the Festival from 10:00-11:00 AM today, due to the Love Run. Shuttle buses from the parking lot will be diverted to the Ride Share drop off point on Avenue of the Republic during that hour. It is not accessible for wheelchairs or mobility devices due to curbs and uneven ground. Please use the Belmont Avenue entrance to Lansdowne Drive, for Drop-offs at the Festival Entrance and to the Accessible Parking along Lansdowne Drive. Please have your placard in your car, and security will direct you where to go. After 11:00 AM the Belmont gate will close and the access to Lansdowne will return to the traffic circle at the intersection of Lansdowne and Avenue of the Republics.
