Touch grass, but make it art history. 🌿🎨

Painting en plein air means leaving the studio behind and painting outdoors, where changing light, weather, and atmosphere become part of the process.

Both John Constable and Camille Pissarro embraced painting outdoors, using direct observation to capture the landscapes and atmosphere around them.

What happens when you give high school students a microphone and a museum to explore?

Introducing Piece by Piece, a new podcast created by local high school students through the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Teen Podcast Intensive.

For its first season, A Cacophony of Artists, students researched works from A Nation of Artists, interviewed curators, scholars, and other voices, and took on roles as producers, showrunners, hosts, and sound designers.

The result is three original episodes exploring works by Dorothea Tanning, Albert Bierstadt, and N. C. Wyeth, each shaped by the students' own questions and perspectives.

Piece by Piece was created in partnership with Big Picture Alliance and Rowhome Productions.

What looks like morning mist is actually smoke.

Small campfires called “smudges” are built to create smoke that helps keep insects away from a campsite. Winslow Homer turned that practical, everyday moment into this hazy watercolor, with the smoke nearly disappearing into the surrounding forest.

The two figures are believed to be Adirondack Mountain guides Rufus Wallace and Michael Flynn. Homer met them during his travels in the region, and Wallace would go on to appear in several of his works.
