My score for “Bloodlines” is coming to all streaming platforms on March 20th.

Finding the right sound for this story was a real challenge, mostly due to the wide range of emotions conveyed in the film. Usually, my process is built around limiting myself to a very specific set of sounds and techniques, but for this project, I felt that I had to tap into my entire toolkit to get it right. All while maintaining a sense of cohesion throughout the score and ensuring that every note was ultimately in service to the story.

Huge thanks to .will_filmdirector for bringing me on board and giving me the space to push myself creatively. I’m very proud of what we created and can’t wait to share this music with all of you.

I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be releasing my score for “Tainted Waters” on July 11th. Coming to Spotify, Apple Music, and all other music streaming platforms. The film itself released on Peacock in 2023, and I don’t normally release this late, but even after multiple delays due to other projects I was working on, I felt that this score still deserved a proper album release. Better late than never, right?

Few pieces of gear inspire me to create in the same way as the Morphagene. It’s a module that finds its way into just about every project of mine. I especially love sampling acoustic instruments into it to give a patch a more organic feel. Such a great way to get away from traditional analog-style waveforms.

The initial brainstorming phase is my favorite part of the film scoring process. I love immersing myself in the process of creating sounds and composing melodic themes without having to worry about structure and arrangement, much less what is happening on screen. This gives me a solid basis for further development and eventually confirming to picture.

I really can’t overstate the importance of making your own sounds from scratch when scoring a film. It really helps give each project its own distinct musical identity.

I’ve been getting a lot of use out the Originals Epic Choir library on a horror feature I’ve been scoring. Really goes to show that an instrument doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg in order to produce a high quality sound. Especially if your goal is not necessarily a “realistic” sound (though I’m sure it does quite well in that regard as well)

I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of music and technology. Since so much of my music relies on textural sound design, I tend to think of the studio more as an instrument rather than simply a tool for capturing a performance.

I often use piano as a foundational element in my film scores. Since a lot of my music relies on abstract sound design and textural synths, I find that piano can be a great way to make a track feel less chaotic and more palatable.

Wave-sequencing synthesis has become my favorite way of creating evolving pads in my film scores. Not the most intuitive synthesis technique, but one that excels at creating movement and atmosphere. A valuable tool in any film composer’s toolbox.

Incorporating Dante networking into my studio (using the Red16Line) has streamlined so much of my film scoring process. It allows me to seamlessly run multi-channel audio from my main composing computer to a separate tree Pro Tools rig using just a single Ethernet cable. In this setup, the Pro Tools machine acts as a master timeline for the entire film, which I can record individual cues into as I finish writing them. This really helps with organization and makes final delivery a much more straightforward process.

Electric guitar is one of my favorite instruments to sample in my film scores. There are just so many non-traditional ways of approaching the instrument, and lately I’ve been especially fascinated by things like slide guitar, ebows, violin bows, and any other way of getting sound out of it other than your typical picking and strumming techniques.

I love using electric guitars in my film scores. It’s something I used to really avoid in my early days as a composer, but as time goes on, I’m finding myself gravitating toward the instrument more and more.

The key to using guitars effectively in cinematic music is to think of it less like a traditional instrument and more as a textural element, to be further manipulated using things like FX pedals, software plug-ins, or even eurorack synth modules. It’s an approach that requires thinking about the entire signal chain, rather than just the frets underneath your fingers, and often times feels much more like working with a synthesizer than a guitar. Definitely makes for some very unique sounds that would be quite difficult to accomplish by any other means.
