MORE THAN THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL

Our great Marian Andersons life journey and historic footprint was more than just her historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Marian Anderson was the Voice of the Century, she was a woman of Firsts. She was a voice for Freedom, a Humanitarian , a Drum Major for Peace. We share this treasured photograph from our archive collection of Marian Anderson standing with historic composer and her mentor Harry T. Burleigh as she received the historic Spingarn Medal Award from the NAACP circa 1939. Learn and explore with our brand new Exhibit for the Semiquincentennial 'Marian The American Story'

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

(Official Photograph of the Marian Anderson Museum and Historical Society)

The Marian Anderson Museum and Historical Society would like to sincerely wish every Father, Grandfather and Father Figure a blessed and memorable Fathers Day.

"I remember John Anderson, my father, very clearly, he was a very tall, dark handsome man. Father took pride in his work at the Union Baptist Church, He was a special officer there, and among other things had charge of the ushers. He received no pay for his service; it was something that a person did out of love for his religion and duty to his church. He loved this job and never missed a Sunday at church.

Our big outing each year was a trip to the Barnum and Bailey Circus. To us it was like a great journey away from home. We prepared for the day long in advance. Father would buy us something new to wear.Father made it a point to provide us with new bonnets, and he would go to a shop and select them himself. When we were very young he would bring each of us one of the sailor hats then in fashion, with a gay ribbon trailing down the back. Later on he chose different bonnets for each of us, and he always insisted that they be trimmed with flowers. He would wait in the store while a brightly colored bloom was sewed to each hat. When he got home, carrying his gifts in a paper bag, he would take them out happily and present them to us, making sure that they fit. A basket or two was prepared, and off we went, taking a trolley car for what seemed like an endless ride. We had wonderful lunches and afternoon snacks. Our eyes were big with delight, trying to follow all the acts going on at the same time under the big tent. " ~ Marian Anderson

JUNETEENTH

(Official Photograph of the Marian Anderson Museum and Historical Society)

"Virginia suffered more physical destruction than any state during the Civil War, causing a vast exodus of blacks to the large industrial cities of the North after the war. Near the end of the century Benjamin and Isabella Anderson joined the exodus north, not only to escape the clutches of Jim Crow but to seek more opportunities for work and better schools. They settled in South Philadelphia, in a house on Fitzwater Street, among the blacks, Jews, Italians and Irish who made up one of the oldest ethnically and racially diverse neighborhoods in the country. Like most streets in South Philadelphia, Fitzwater was lined with row houses, many of them with the green shutters and white marble stoops typical of the neighborhood. Benjamin found work as a laborer. Isabella took in boarders, some of them children whose parents were not able to keep their families together. On occasion, she also acted as midwife for neighborhood doctors." ~ Allan Keiler Author of A Singers Journey. Pictured is Isabella Anderson Paternal Grandmother of Marian Anderson

As we pause as a nation to honor Juneteenth, we ask that you remember the life and legacy of our great Marian Anderson and her historic footprint in the fabric of this Nation by supporting the Marian Anderson Museum and Historical Society.
