2026 will mark the 90th anniversary of the WPA Poster Division of the Federal Art Project — one of the most remarkable efforts in our country’s history that gave artists jobs that worked for the public good.

These posters weren’t just eye-catching, they were public service tools that promoted everything from public health and safety to education, national parks, the arts — and even hope — during some of the hardest times in the U.S.

This exhibit is part of Peters Valley’s participation in “Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026” with Craft in America.

While researching craft schools created during the WPA for our exhibit opening this weekend at Peters Valley School of Craft, we found this hand blockprinted poster that promoted an exhibition of works from the women of the WPA Milwaukee Handicraft Project circa 1936 from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee

Stop by the Roxborough Neighborhood Library to hang out with Ennis and print WPA poster designs to take home!

THIS SATURDAY: Screenprint your own historical poster! 12pm - 2pm.

Join Posters for People to print a replica of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) poster. The WPA was created to employ people during the Great Depression and helped artists create iconic posters that are still replicated today.

This program runs from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. We will print the Independence Hall poster from 12pm - 1pm and the Aquarium poster from 1pm - 2pm. All supplies will be provided.

A weekend getaway workshop in the woods for under $500⁠
(Previously titled “Art for Everyone: Designing & Printing WPA-Inspired Posters”)

Step back in time to learn the same screenprinting method that WPA poster artists perfected and used to make bold, iconic public awareness posters in the late 1930s in the U.S. Participants will learn and practice classic design principles to make their own uniquely designed “poster for the people,” create a screen using vintage methods, and hand print multiples to take home.

No prior screenprinting experience required.

This workshop is presented in conjunction with the “Posters for the People: Art of the WPA” exhibit in the Peters Valley Gallery Sept 19th – Oct 25, 2026 and is part of Peters Valley’s participation in “Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026” with Craft in America.⁠
