🌳 The Tree of Life — rooted, watchful and alive 🌳
There's a reason the Tree of Life shows up again and again across so many traditions — it's the axis where the underworld, the earthly world, and the heavens all meet. This altar board is my take on that old symbol, engraved into natural slate and wrapped in a Celtic knotwork border.

Look closely and you'll find the tree isn't alone. An owl watches from the branches, a fox sleeps curled in the roots, and a hedgehog moves quietly through the undergrowth below — small guardians tucked into the design, the way the old stories always had something hidden in the roots if you knew where to look.
This piece was made to be used, not just admired — set your candles on it, lay out your offerings and let it anchor your altar space. The slate is durable, holds detail beautifully, and only grows more beautiful with time and use.
Each board is engraved by yours truly here at Bone Stone Wood and Fire, and this one is a one-of-a-kind piece — once it finds its home, there won't be another exactly like it.

Herbwitch's Pentacle Slate Altar Board
There's something about slate that feels right for altar work — it's stone shaped by time and pressure, carrying the weight and stillness of the earth itself. Cool to the touch, dark and grounding, it's long been favored as an Earth-element surface for ritual and reflection.
This piece is hand-engraved with a pentacle at its center, wreathed in wildflowers, herbs, and mushrooms — with a mortar and pestle resting just below and a crescent moon rising above. The whole scene is framed in an interwoven Celtic knot border, a symbol of continuity and protection with no clear beginning or end.

Fox & Trinity Knot Slate Altar Board
Slate is stone born of ancient sediment, pressed by time into something dense, dark, and quietly powerful. In folk tradition it's long been tied to the Earth element — grounding, protection, balance, and the kind of stillness that makes it a natural home for ritual work. Its cool, matte surface holds candlelight and shadow beautifully, making it a favorite base for altars, tarot spreads, and offerings.
Engraved into the slate is a triquetra, the trinity knot — a symbol of threefold union: maiden, mother, crone; earth, sea, sky; body, mind, spirit. Its unbroken, interwoven lines are read by many as a mark of eternity and protection, with no clear beginning or end.
At the heart of the design sits a fox, curled among roses and wildflowers. The fox is widely honored as a spirit of cunning, adaptability, and quiet wisdom — a guide who moves unseen between worlds, at home equally in shadow and in bloom. Surrounding it, the knotwork border echoes the endless-knot motif found throughout Celtic art, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all living things and the cyclical nature of the seasons.
Every board is hand-engraved, with raw, natural slate edges left unpolished — a reminder that no two pieces of earth, and no two paths, are ever quite the same.
