A Host of People's CLEOPATRA BOY is part courtroom drama, part theatrical reclamation and celebration. This play explores justice in representation—in our past, present, and future. Cleopatra Boy is provocative, but, as with all of AHOP's shows, it is also warm, funny, poetic, and silly in one moment, deadly serious in the next, and ultimately uplifting.

TODAY! At Poetic Societies/Ava Ansari's How to Make a Bouquet in a Voting Box?, guests will be received one by one, and work with Ansari to draft a personal body contract for themselves around the act of voting. Working from a space of delicacy, using flowers and the body, and rooted in multiple body-mind modalities, including Iyengar yoga, viewpoints, Suzuki, and Persian poetry, trance, and dance. Appointments will last up to 45 minutes, enough time to ground the body, do breathing practice, and create enough foundation to do the expressive writing. The act of voting is deeply personal and touch-based, and therefore rooted in poetic legalities and personal and collective body contracts.

Emily Bate's WIG WAG is an interactive theater piece where the audience and performers explore communal music-making. The piece unfolds as a secular "church service" that uses group singing, group text recitation, and music performed by a vocal quartet to explore the tension and pleasure of co-existing with others. Working across myriad disciplines, Ahya Simone is a Detroit-based artist, performer, filmmaker, and harpist. Simone’s many pronged practice is bound by an exploration of Black identity, aesthetic, and community building.

IRIDESCENCE is a live-scored abstract short film around revealing one’s self and autonomy of storytelling. "Using my body as a main visual subject, I explore my universe of interests – visually and sonically. I am always fascinated with time, clocks, and astrological natal chart geometry as symbols of measurement of existence. This work is a visual representation and celebration of my body in the midst of dysphoria, the beauty of time in cycles (astrology)."

What is The Philadelphia Thing?

The Philadelphia Thing is an advocacy and producing structure dedicated to the support and promotion of independent performing artists in Philadelphia. Using an artist-centered practice, The Philadelphia Thing connects artists with performance development resources, producing consultation, and marketplace advocacy, inside and outside of Philadelphia. By strengthening and enriching the ecosystem for the creation of performance work within the city, TPT builds connections among and between artists and audiences in Philadelphia and beyond.

The first initiative of The Philadelphia Thing is Trade School, a festival and exchange platform celebrating the work of Philadelphia performing artists as well as creating connections with artist peers across the country.

This endeavor is named with love, gratitude, and apologies to Mark Lord, who coined the title “The Philadelphia Thing” for a Headlong Performance eXchange conversation in the summer of 2015.
