Roy DeCarava

Born in New York City's Harlem neighborhood in 1919, Roy DeCarava came of age during the Harlem Renaissance, when artistic activity and achievement among African Americans flourished across the literary, musical, dramatic, and visual arts.

Gordon Parks was a self-taught photographer, writer, composer, and filmmaker. Parks is remembered as the first African American photographer who worked for Vogue and Lifemagazines, best known for his documentary photojournalism of the 1940s through 1970s. He notably captured iconic images of the civil rights movement, investigating important turning points in inner cities.
