Grace Dance Theater (GDT) of Philadelphia began as "Company Grace" in 1991. The grass roots modern dance ensemble embodies the grace of dance, the spirit of dance, and the sheer joy of dance. Their powerful movements stir the heart because they dance about the human condition. GDT was oringinally stated to give a talented group of dancers form Progressive Center for Dance a venue to showcase their
talents. Since inception, the mission of GDT has expanded. Today talented artist from the tri-state area work together to bring the community a beautiful artform. GDT's first concert was held in May of 1992. The concert featured three major works: "Gospel Suite", "Jazz Suite" and "Past to Future". These pieces were instant favorites of the audience and has become apart of the companies repetory. GDT has has numerous concerts and performances since its debutane. Engagements include art showcases in Baltimore and Philadelphia, Art exchanges at Painted Bride and CCP, and guest peformances at Temple Univeristy, Sharon Baptist, Calvery Episcopal, and Greater Exodus Churches. In addition GDT holds a annual Black History concert, bringing together dance organizations to celebrate the history of African Americans. Now in the company’s 27th season, GDT is now the umbrella origination for Grace Dance Theater II, The Training Company of Grace, and the CCD Children’s Dance Ensemble. Although much has changed in the company since it began, the mission remains the same: to showcase local dance artists and choreographers; to build citizenship and character through the teaching of dance education to low and middle income inner-city youth, and "Wake up the spirit of the audience through Dance”
