This Labor Day we pulled Lilith and Her Demons out of the archives to rediscover it and reinspire ourselves. We spent the afternoon teaching it to artists altogether in a rehearsal room for the first time, and it was such a joy. We’re so excited to see what’s next for this project.

“The poems this piece is adapted from are already so rich, and has really made them sing (literally and artistically). We’ve learned a lot over the years by presenting Lilith and Her Demons in a bar, as a concept album, and on film. I’m excited for the next phase of its evolution, as we originally conceived it, as a song cycle.” - (director)
Don’t miss the concert TONIGHT!

“We haven’t been in person with this piece since its initial workshop 5 years ago. So much has changed, both in the piece and in the world. “I’m looking forward to getting to work on these songs live with musicians in the room for the very first time since 2020. I can’t wait to see how individual voices and experiences can affect the way the songs can best be delivered in a setting where we can make adjustments on the fly.“ (music & lyrics) on her process with Lilith and Her Demons. What song does ensemble sing that you hum in the dark?
For a long while I’ve known that I want to create a space that raises up the work of my people. My tribe. My ensemble. This year I happened to find myself in the perfect personal crisis to prompt an official pilot launch of such a collective. One year post-grad with a degree in Directing, a hunger to do the thing I paid a lot of money to study, and no one hiring 23-year-old directors to direct. Then Damien Figueras sends me a text message one day, pretty out of the blue. I’m bored and want to work on something. I was trying to think of the last process I really enjoyed, and it’s Now We Are Six. Let’s get coffee? (That would be my thesis production, a new musical based on poetry by AA Milne, which Damien composed & music directed.)
Well, you know I love coffee, so we did. And now Apartment 20 is embarking on its first Fringe production, The Buried Life.
Apartment 20 is a new, ensemble theatre collective, committed to new work that emphasizes personal narrative, musicality, and unapologetically honest storytelling. Apartment 20 is interested in creating a community out of a rehearsal room, and inviting audiences into that community once a project reaches the stage. As an artist and collaborator, I believes in finding my tribe, and seeking out opportunities to share its collective and individual work. Apartment 20 was created as an active way to do so.
Apartment 20 was created as a platform and a gathering place; for artist-driven work and those invested in the discourse and experimentation required to bring passion projects into being. Each of the workshops and productions presented by Apartment 20 have been proposed by one or more of its residents, in an effort to investigate one unifying question....
"What song does ensemble sing that you hum in the dark?"
You may also be thinking, why “Apartment 20”? My favorite TV show is Friends. I know, it doesn’t hold up in some ways, everybody hates Ross for some reason, blah blah blah. I’m done pretending it’s a guilty pleasure of mine. It’s just a pleasure. It was really important to me moving through my teens and into adult life, and resonates even more right now. When Friends first aired, they thought, hmm maybe this will be a thing. Then we arrive at season two or three and they’re thinking, whoa this is a thing. The cast members’ contracts were eventually up for renewal, and execs wanted to start paying some cast members more than others. The six banded together and said, either we all get a raise or none of us do. This is an ensemble show, we’re not going about it any other way.
And so they did. That ensemble piece aired for ten seasons, in The Village at the corner of Grove and Bedford Streets, in Apartment 20 where they all lived. What we’re doing here at Apartment 20 is an ensemble piece, no matter what.
I hope you’ll join us on the journey of The Buried Life, and hope to see you there at Vox Populi from 9/18 through 9/21.
