Plot:

Antigone begins with The two sons of Oedipus, Eteocles and Polyneices, who are fighting for the kingship of Thebes. Both men die in the battle. Their successor, Kreon, decides that King Eteocles will be buried, but Polyneices, because he was leading a foreign army, will be left on the field of battle. Antigone, his sister, buries him anyway.

Antigone is caught burying Polyneices and is condemned to death. Her boyfriend and Kreon's son, Haemon, learns about this and tries to convince Kreon to change his mind. It's only then that the seer Tyresias appears. After a long discussion, he finally persuades Kreon that the gods want Polyneices buried. By then it's too late -- Antigone has hung herself, Haemon kills himself when he finds her, and Kreon's wife kills herself when she learns about her son.

George Gibbs (male, age 17-25) George is a popular teenager and athlete, earnest and energetic. He grows up next door to Emily, his long-time crush who becomes his wife in Act 2.

Opening Friday, November 15:
HOME by David Storey
directed by Robert Bauer

Two English gentlemen discuss topics in the news, the past, and old friends. Two women of a certain age talk about the weather and ill-fitting shoes. A younger man doesn't say much. He seems obsessed with lifting and moving the chairs. But where are these people, exactly? Could it perhaps be a resort or a small private hotel? Or might it be another type of facility where they are all residents? Get to know these extraordinarily ordinary people as they mix and mingle and share their stories.

Performances are on Friday and Saturday evenings, November 15 to 30, at 8:00, and Sunday afternoon, November 24, at 3:00, in Pilling Hall at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown, 6001 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19144.

An Anniversary Announcement

To our Drama Group Friends…

As you may or may not know, The Drama Group began sort of by accident when a few members of The First United Methodist Church of Germantown decided they’d like to do a fully-staged reading of a play called “The Shadow Box” by Michael Cristofer on Good Friday evening in the long ago year of 1980. In the ensuing 40 years, The Drama Group went on to produce two shows per season. Our 2019-2020 season consists of David Storey’s fascinating play “Home” directed by Robert Bauer in the fall, and an as yet unannounced play to be directed by Colleen Bracken in the spring. And after that… things will be changing.

The Drama Group will no longer commit to staging two show seasons. Instead we will be producing shows on a now and then, show by show, basis. We will also be looking to produce shows in collaboration with other groups who may benefit from a co-production with The Drama Group. Other options will also be considered.

Over the years, the thing we have been lacking most is volunteers. Actors and directors have always been eager to work with us. But it has been difficult to attract the people who are willing, and even eager, to work backstage, to build sets, to learn about tech. More recently, we have even had difficulty rounding up enough volunteers to work the box office and usher at one of our six performances.

And so, while we truly grateful for all of the support you, our loyal friends, have provided over the years, we simply don’t have the human resources to continue as we have in the past. But we’re still here, and still looking forward to another excellent season.

Further details will be provided as the future of The Drama Group continues to take shape. Your response and suggestions are always welcome at [email protected]. Let’s continue looking ahead together.
