Vision Through Art

Vision Through Art Vision Thru Art is a weekly sculpture and mixed media class for the blind and visually impaired at the Allens Lane Art Center in Mount Airy, Philadelphia

Vision Thru Art is a weekly sculpture class for blind and visually-impaired artists that has been running at Allens Lane Art Center for more than 30 years. Our dedicated faculty, staff and volunteers help the students express their inner vision through a variety of media including clay, wood, mosaic, stone and other mixed materials. The students are encouraged to work at their own pace while enjoy

ing the easy-going social atmosphere of the class. In 2014, Allens Lane Art Center made the class completely free for all the students including free art supplies each year. In 2016, Allens Lane Art Center invited all the students from the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Form in Art program to join them as the museum began its major construction renovation so that the students could continue their studio practices uninterrupted. Allens Lane Art Center was thrilled to be able to welcome both the new students and volunteers from the Museum into its program because of the generous support of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Women’s Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Woodbury Foundation in honor of Vaughn Stubbs.

I worked with Barbara Mitchell underglazing her, what should I call it, “flat-Stanley” clay figure scene. The project was introduced by Zipora, instructor, last fall and the students produced beautiful and diverse works which are just now receiving finishing touches and being staged for kiln firing. Barbara was very specific about achieving authentic racial skin tones for the three different groupings of figures along the edges of a circular plate.Particularly she wanted a white that was not bone white, a black that was not pitch black. And the large central figure, erect but resting mostly on their shins and knees and shins, that she wanted unglazed, just its natural color, earthen.
