We’re thrilled to share the first look at The Landscape of Memory, a screening and conversation with Maori Karmel Holmes, Sama Alshaibi, and Lali Khalid, moderated by curator Zehra Zehra.

The evening begins with a screening of the films featured in Extended Constellations, followed by a conversation on landscape, memory, and endurance across their practices.

Save the date: Thursday, October 29 from 6 to 8 PM at Public Trust, 4017 Walnut St, Philadelphia.

Presented with Public Trust, the University of Pennsylvania’s Cinema & Media Studies program and the Asian American Studies Program, and Wharton Art Club.

We’re thrilled to present Extended Constellations, curated by Zehra Zehra, featuring Sama Alshaibi, Lali Khalid, and Carrie Mae Weems.

Three artists from markedly different geographies and histories, one shared sky. Through photography and video, their work treats the female body as a site of endurance, with landscape, ritual, and tenderness as quiet defiance.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, October 30 from 6 to 8 PM. Lali Khalid will sign her newly released monograph, Letters to Azan, at the opening.

The night before, we’ll be at Public Trust (4017 Walnut St) on October 29 from 6 to 8 PM for Landscapes of Memory, a conversation between Sama Alshaibi, Maori Holmes, and Lali Khalid, moderated by Zehra Zehra and preceded by a screening of the films featured in the show.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us last night for the opening of Nihad Dukhan: Unbroken Lineages I. It was a joy to see the gallery filled with the work of master calligrapher Nihad Dukhan, which spans the classical to the contemporary, including a modern style that is his own creation, all rooted in an unbroken lineage of an ancient art form.

Unbroken Lineages I is on view through October 15 at 106 N 2nd St. in Old City, Philadelphia. If you couldn’t make it to the reception, we’d love to have you stop by while the show is up.

Presented in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania’s Sachs Program for Arts Innovation.

We’re thrilled to share Unbroken Lineages I: Nihad Dukhan, on view at Twelve Gates Arts from October 2 through October 15. Dukhan is a Michigan-based Palestinian American master of Arabic and Islamic calligraphy whose work bridges classical training with a contemporary voice built over decades of practice.

We’re thrilled to share The Saami Khayal Apprenticeship: Student Showcase - a night of live Khayal performance from apprentices who spent five weeks training directly with the Saami Ustaads, master practitioners of one of Hindustani classical music’s oldest vocal traditions.

Over the residency, students worked on the fundamentals of voice culture, pitch and note recognition, deep listening, and the microtonal ornamentation that defines a Raag in its original form. This showcase is where that work meets an audience for the first time.

We’re looking for a creative team member to join us at Twelve Gates Arts!

This is a remote/hybrid role at $15/hour for 10 hours a week. You’ll help edit photos, support our Instagram under supervision, and work on our Squarespace site. Comfort with Canva and Adobe is important, and so is clear, friendly communication. Squarespace basics are enough - we’re happy to teach the rest. If you take your own photos, that’s a real plus.

Tamiko is a poet, writer, and spell-maker, author of Last Days and We Come Elemental, and co-editor of Poetry As Spellcasting. She’ll give a reading and lead a generative writing workshop, with space for poets to write and share new work.
