🕊️ In Loving Memory of Carmen de Lavallade (1931–2025)
Today, we honor the life, legacy, and immeasurable impact of Carmen de Lavallade — a dance pioneer, cultural bearer, and living bridge to the lineage of Lester Horton.
Carmen was not only a legend of the stage and screen; she was a mentor, teacher, and guardian of history. Through her generosity, rigor, and unwavering belief in the power of legacy, she helped shape generations of artists — including our founder and director, Dr. Iquail Shaheed.
Her mentorship extended far beyond technique. She embodied grace, grit, discipline, and deep care for the stories carried in the body. She nurtured artists fiercely, demanded excellence unapologetically, and protected the integrity of the work. Her presence affirmed that lineage is not only preserved — it is lived.
At DANCE IQUAIL!, we carry forward the values Carmen stood for: devotion to craft, respect for ancestry, and the responsibility to pass knowledge forward with love and precision. Her legacy lives in our movement, our teaching, and our commitment to honoring those who came before us.
We are heartbroken — and profoundly grateful.
Rest well, Carmen de Lavallade.
Your light continues to guide us. 🤍
