Since 1975, Opera Philadelphia has been Philadelphia’s professional opera company, performing at the historic Academy of Music, the Kimmel Center’s contemporary and intimate Perelman Theater, and across the city during our new annual festival, O, launching in the fall of 2017. The Opera strives to deliver outstanding productions of both traditional and exciting new works that resonate with the community; to identify, cultivate, and cast rising young talent alongside internationally-acclaimed singers; and to present innovative programs that educate, broaden, deepen, and diversify the opera audience, both in Philadelphia and beyond.

Libretto adapted by the composer from writing by Robert Walser (Trans. Ron Sadan) and Arthur Quiller-Couch

A god leads us constantly by the hand.
Were it not so, where would we end up?
Have we any guarantee that we
could endure things without some higher power –
could we persist without such support,
which we fail to see because it is a riddle to us?
Everything is dreamlike: our homes,
our businesses, our trades, our daily bread,
our cities and countries, the light, the sun.

Libretto:
O God, how can I explain this anguish in my heart?
Women, you alone can understand my grief.
I have never felt such a fierce, bitter throbbing in my heart.
Madame, calm yourself! Please stop this cruel torment.
Oh heavens, I want to leave, but I’m trapped, O God!
