always so cool to see the clay transform into ceramic through the process. these pieces were hand built with white stoneware clay that was colored. i decorated with dark green slip (viscous watered down clay) and glazed in clear with some accents with washes! all the vibrant colors are the clay itself doing its thang!!! recently i’ve been really enjoying the hand building process over throwing (less to clean up after too hehe). something about using my fingers to shape and smooth everything out to be perfectly imperfect forms is soooo satisfying!! i am also starting to level up by experimenting with combining handbuilding and wheelthrowing techniques 🍯

thanks to everyone who got something from my drop so far :) i have these six ashtrays left and would love for someone to have them in their home to enjoy 🫶🏼 order yours with the link in my bio!!!

Update on Philly-based Viet art fundraiser for the Gaza Mutual Aid Collective!

As of February 15th, we’ve fundraised $526.45, and funds have been transferred successfully. Next week, we will be sending a second round of funds. Test tiles are super important for potters to get a sense of how decoration shows up on their clay. I just bought a bunch of underglazes and wanted to see what they would look like on white clay, brown clay, and brown clay with white slip on top! You can also see how the clear glaze on half of the underglaze swipes also really affect the results of the final underglaze appearance. Also spot my little test tile for my 🐉🏺After looking at how it turned out, now I’m trying to brainstorm how to make the yellow clay stand out more against the bright red clay & wash!

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I love making incense bowls. I have such a deep spiritual connection to creating a piece of artwork that plays such a pivotal role in housing offerings to my ancestors. There’s something about shaping the clay into these kinds of pieces, something about how when we transition our bodies return to the earth, becoming the clay that holds incense, smoke swirling in the sky towards the edge of the universe, so on and so forth.

When my ông ngoại passed away in November 2022, it sparked an important time for me of rediscovering my spirituality, especially my connection to my ancestors. This piece is my first hand built incense bowl, and I thought it would be a beautiful gift to my mother for Christmas, since she was re-doing our family room and family altars. My mom has had a tough couple of years, and I know her father’s spirit beats in her heart so strongly, encouraging her to forge ahead.

I love seeing this incense bowl up there with my grandpa and his Dunhill Reds. I feel my connection to him deeply, every single day. Miss you loads, thanks for the car and keeping me moving ❤️
