“Play dough? Just play dough?” People ask me all the time. “Just watch.” I say, “it’s so much more.” ❤️🧡💛💙💚💜

hi 👋 im Erin and I started Adoughma out of my kitchen, for kids like my son and his friends and our community in Philadelphia. Adoughma joined the team at Jewish Learning Venture last year because this team knows that everybody loves to play, and most people, no matter how old they are, really love to play with dough.

My mother passed away of dementia this year and even while she declined, she and my kids enjoyed her occupational therapy sessions together.

It got me thinking 🤔 dough regulates 🌀 the body and brings joyful play to the heart ❤️ maybe dough can tell a story or help us learn 📕 or remember important facts 🧮. Dough brings us all to the same table and invites us to sit together, share together, create together.

Maybe dough can do so much more.

Oh Hanukkah. 🤦🏻‍♀️ This time of year is full of lights, noise, disruption to the routine, a lot of sugar, excitement, and SO MANY big feelings — which means it’s also full of sensory overwhelm. 😳 We get it and we've got your back with some tools to plan out your week!

The story of Hanukkah has such valuable messages + deep meaning of resilience, pride, hope, light that lasts longer than expected, but if you’re like me, you end up focusing on “perfect” food, decorations, photos, or the “right” reactions.

Let’s try this. Let’s ask ourselves, what really matters to make Hanukkah meaningful? Are we having a “learning” night or are we letting go and enjoying where we’re at? 💙 It’s okay if your kids don’t eat the latkes. It’s okay if the reaction to the gift doesn’t match the expectation of the giver.

Neurodivergent kids might say “I hate this” simply because the moment was too big, too fast, too much. When they use the gift later, that is their version of “thank you.”

Release the pressure. Lower the demands. Increase compassion.
It’s not about the perfect presents - it’s simply your presence that brings the light. 🔥

OH the places you'll DOUGH 🌀 COLUMBUS, OHIO - Four synagogues, 20 teens, 100 kids, 1 Jewish day school, and 30 community professionals to explore Jewish sensory play + create sensory supportive Jewish learning spaces.

One highlight ✨: diving into Mishnah Sanhedrin and its reminder that while all coins come from the same mold, each person is uniquely created — a beautiful lesson in Kavod HaBriyot, honoring the dignity of every individual.

Watching students express this idea through their creative sensory play was inspiring + reaffirmed how play helps us make sense of our world, our values, and ourselves.

Creation 🌎 an ancient story the Jewish ✡️ people share with 2 other faiths of how the world came to be. Each year, a small section of Torah - the central, sacred text of the Jewish people - is read each week from the very beginning until the very end, and then the following year to begin again. Last week in synagogues 🕍 all over the world, the story of how God created the 🌎 in 7 days was chanted from the ancient scroll. Each section of the Torah (parasha in Hebrew) has so many rich sensory elements, it’s hard to pick just one! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Guess that’s why it’s read over and over again. Build a Sukkah. But make it sensory-friendly 🌀 the Jewish holiday of Sukkot celebrates the journey through the desert the Israelites undertook from enslavement in Egypt to freedom in the promised land. Many Jews build backyard temporary dwellings for one week to recall the fragility of what we think is permanent and our mutual reliance on nature and each other. When we gather, we must consider competing needs and sometimes we gather in a way that prioritizes some sets of needs over others. However you celebrate, know that navigating different needs can be a challenge, one that the Jewish people have been working on together for a very long time. We may never arrive at that perfect destination, but we keep learning and growing and we keep our doors (and tents) open. And the journey will be quite an adventure. חג שמח happy holidays 🍋🌴
