About Epileptic Eyes...
Ever since being diagnosed with epilepsy at fifteen, Erika Robertson began seeing the world through a different lens than she had previously. Auras are the sensation of before or after a seizure, which is different in each person, and these are the visions experienced by Erika during that confusing time where consciousness is either here nor there. After many times falling into the spells of the visions seen in these auras, struggling to understand what happened to others who do not experience, or will never experience. It was always a curse, until writings and sketches made right before or after a seizure inspired the paintings to tell her version of this alternate reality that her brain would travel to.
Through the desire to want to share the story and educate those who may not understand epilepsy (or other conditions that affect the mind) and how it transfers to creative processes, Epileptic Eyes was born. Each piece has an air of a dream-like state, showing the surreal side of a place she travels to while seizing. Every experience has a sense of deja vu and is always terrifyingly beautiful to travel to. Take a glimpse into the eyes of a psychedelic journey that the brain and body want to take you down and experience an aura through one woman’s life with epilepsy.
Erika Robertson, 28, is born and raised in a small town in southern New Jersey. Diagnosed at fifteen, she has struggled with her health and how it affects her professional and personal life. Erika started off by writing short thoughts and phrases in her aura state to try and stay focused in the real world. After sharing writings and sketches with friends and family, she began putting them onto canvas in order to show the dreamy state of mind with blurry brush strokes and colors than envision a hallucinogenic trip, but with only her mind as the guide. Erika currently lives and works out of Nashville, TN
