Went over to the thrift store today and found this gem! It’s only been two weeks since my last seizure, but seeing all these names, I am thankful I have gotten it under more control than ten years ago. Shout out to all those struggling with epilepsy and continue to fight hard every day 💜💜

Sometimes you just can’t motivate yourself to create, so you watch your dog freak out over a bone instead. He’s a ween!

Today is International Epilepsy Day!

Tell a ‘leptic you love them, take a minute tops out of your day to read a couple facts about seizure first aid (epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders - you could save a life!) and seize the day every day 🤘

As one who struggles with epilepsy, this is a condition that is easy to hide the bad, I’ve gotten away for months with people not knowing about it, and many people do not even know anything about it besides you have seizures. It’s more than that - the side effects of medication, the fear of the next seizure and where you could end up having it. I had to drop out of school, lost jobs, lost friends and missed out on fun activities, have been groped coming out of one and have even had seizures that have injured me, including one in a shower where I almost drowned myself from falling the wrong way. I have come a long way from frequent seizures, but even still it comes up. I hate my epilepsy, it used to embarrass me to no end (running out of a house naked definitely takes the cake) but I am as close to normal (health wise) as I can be and hey, I’ve made some cool paintings from it and have really been spreading the word and educating with it!

To all of you with epilepsy, I appreciate your support and understand your struggle! Please reach out to me when you need an ear 💜

After a month long hiatus of moving, I am finally back at it again! This past week has been a tremendous boost to my ego by having more paintings from my previous collection sold and has inspired me to branch out to learning more techniques and explore different themes close to my life.

Last week, I got to play around in my new home and painted this to the album "Bi***es Brew" by Miles Davis and this other piece called "Feminine Takeover" which was a gift to my closest friend and strongest woman.

After experiencing trauma from an assault by a previous male roommate / friend and confronting those haunting memories within the past couple months, I knew I had to bring light to this issue that so many womxn go through. My next collection will include themes on coming to terms with abuse, the struggles, positives and negatives of telling others and the power and strength women have that tries to be diminished in a male dominated world. This will be an extremely personal venture and I hope it will encourage others who have been a victim of assault to create or begin to open up about their own stories.

Check out my Instagram for regular updates!
In the meantime, while my collection is being made, you can also subscribe to my mailing list through my website and to see available paintings for purchase.

Be whoever you want! There’s a lot of hate going on right now and it’s too tough of a world to hide you are. Unfortunately, this is the reality of many of our friends in the LGBTQ+ community.

Being a bisexual woman, I have received my own type of judgement from others, but there are so many people who are scared for their lives to be who they truly are. I like to stay positive, but there is still so much work to be done. We need to bother the crap out of our representatives to inform them what we really want, equality in all aspects of life. Our LGBTQ+ friends need our support. No one should be stuck in one category because life is never black and white.

My dream gal 😍

November is epilepsy awareness month, with the color representing epilepsy awareness. This painting gives a nod to epilepsy awareness month as well as represents my life having a new beginning thanks to ma*****na. Without it, I’d be unable to work or remember anything. I was able to get myself off two medications because of it. Leave the judgement for those with no empathy and find the path that makes you the healthiest.

About Epileptic Eyes...

Ever since being diagnosed with epilepsy at fifteen, Erika Robertson began seeing the world through a different lens than she had previously. Auras are the sensation of before or after a seizure, which is different in each person, and these are the visions experienced by Erika during that confusing time where consciousness is either here nor there. After many times falling into the spells of the visions seen in these auras, struggling to understand what happened to others who do not experience, or will never experience. It was always a curse, until writings and sketches made right before or after a seizure inspired the paintings to tell her version of this alternate reality that her brain would travel to.

Through the desire to want to share the story and educate those who may not understand epilepsy (or other conditions that affect the mind) and how it transfers to creative processes, Epileptic Eyes was born. Each piece has an air of a dream-like state, showing the surreal side of a place she travels to while seizing. Every experience has a sense of deja vu and is always terrifyingly beautiful to travel to. Take a glimpse into the eyes of a psychedelic journey that the brain and body want to take you down and experience an aura through one woman’s life with epilepsy.

Erika Robertson, 28, is born and raised in a small town in southern New Jersey. Diagnosed at fifteen, she has struggled with her health and how it affects her professional and personal life. Erika started off by writing short thoughts and phrases in her aura state to try and stay focused in the real world. After sharing writings and sketches with friends and family, she began putting them onto canvas in order to show the dreamy state of mind with blurry brush strokes and colors than envision a hallucinogenic trip, but with only her mind as the guide. Erika currently lives and works out of Nashville, TN
