I submitted a sculpture for a huge art gallery show over at Icebox Project Space a little while ago and last night was the closing night of the exhibition.
My piece, called 'One Day' is a sculpture made with hundreds of spent single use contact lens packages laid against each other, bound with a ribbon, parted with a metal pipe, and hung from a microphone stand. There are some chopsticks in there for no apparent reason. On the base of the stand is a reflective foil material, and a few dozen foil labels from the lens containers that say "1 Day", denoting their use for only one day.
The lens containers naturally twist when stacked, creating a pair of spirals that create a mesmerizing appearance when spinning (though I have not created a means by which to actuate that automatically or easily).
What does it mean? Not sure. I find beauty in the discarded, sorrow in waste, but it's more complicated than some finger wagging statement about trash or convenience or environmentalism.

It was great to express myself in this exhibit and I wonder if I can even find time to better myself with yet another hobby. When I was a grade school and even a college student, I was constantly making visual art (despite not studying art formally), but like music, I put it on the shelf for a very long time.
