Painting trees and light with watercolor

There’s something magical about letting the paper do half the work. Here are a few simple steps to help your trees feel alive and glowing.

Step 1: Start with the light
Lay a soft wash where the light is hitting. Keep it loose and let the water naturally blend those edges.

Step 2: Build your tree shapes with mid values
Use quick, varied strokes. Don’t paint every leaf. Suggest the shape and let the viewer’s eye finish it.

Step 3: Drop in darker values while it’s still damp
This creates natural depth and keeps the shadows soft. Think about where branches overlap or where the canopy turns away from the light.

Step 4: Add the dark accents last
A few crisp details in the right places make the whole tree pop. Don’t overdo it.

Step 5: Pull the light back out
Lift a few highlights with a thirsty brush. Instant glow.

Step 6: Step away
Trees come alive when you stop fussing. Let the watercolor breathe.
