Happy Earth Day! Environmental Justice is very important to the effort towards stopping Global Climate Change, but it’s important to remember who is most affected by climate change and natural disasters!

[ID:
Slide 1: Environmental Social Justice, You can't have one without the other.

Slide 2: Some Facts for Earth Day.

Minority groups, including those on the Disability Spectrum are disproportionately affected by Global Climate Change.

On average, people of color comprise 56% of the population living in neighborhoods with environmentally destructive facilities, compared to 30% elsewhere.

Slide 3: Pollution and unsafe jobs in environmentally destructive industries can cause permanent disabilities, but policies to mitigate the impacts of environmental degradation frequently fail to consider Disability Rights.

With an increase in natural disasters due to climate change, those with disabilities are more likely to have difficulties during required evacuations or migrations.

Slide 4: Compromised health makes disabled people more vulnerable to extreme climate events, ecosystem services loss, or infectious diseases.

Due to these long-standing inequalities in living, working, health, and social conditions, minorities in the U.S. are 4-5 times more likely to be hospitalized from COVID-19 than non-Hispanic white persons.
