Some paintings change completely given your proximity to them. Rodger Schultz's "Truffle Hunters" is one of them.

From a distance, it's a calming scene: a girl among the birch trees while two truffle-hunting pigs work the forest floor.

Move closer, and every section becomes its own small composition, built from hundreds of individual colors and marks. Swipe to see.

Rodger describes painting as a spiritual practice. He paints, in part, to heal himself, hoping some of that healing reaches the viewer.

One of the things I love most about Teal Canvas is the opportunity to honor people’s stories. These slices of life where you become intimately involved. The gravity. The weight that life sometimes presents.

This is one of those stories.

Whitney Deal survived a life-changing accident while saving her children’s lives. During recovery from a traumatic brain injury, losing the ability to walk, to speak, her therapy team asked her to visualize a serene place. A place she could internally visit when things became too painful.

She saw a hammock between two willow trees. Flowers. A breeze. Salt in the air. An ocean somewhere just beyond view.

When Whitney, now deep into her recovery, described the scene to me, we presented her with a handful of artists who could bring it to life in a painting.

She immediately knew that Gavin Glakas was the natural choice.

We brought everyone together. As Whitney talked, Gavin began sketching, translating her words into a composition in real time.

It was fascinating to watch. The furious sketching. The erasing. More sketching. A scene pulled from the imagination, not a pristine photograph.

Over the months that followed, that vision, those sketches, became an oil painting.

Recently, we traveled together to Baltimore to hand-deliver it.

The moment Whitney saw it for the first time is in this reel.
There were plenty of tears.

This is Whitney's story. Gavin helped tell it with decency, curiosity, and such immense talent. It was an honor to bring them together.

We love this new series by Brooklyn-based artist Cabell Molina.

Glamorous, meticulously retouched faces mixed with “flawed” vulnerability. Portraits that are expressive, imperfect and deeply human.

The work explores our desire to appear polished and perfect, particularly in a world shaped by social media, AI and retouching. It is within the contrast between the pristine and the messy that the work’s intrigue emerges.

As Cabell so beautifully puts it, that is “where real life happens.”

Perspective can mean so much in visual art.

Artists play with texture and form to change what we see depending on where we stand.

But to me, especially within the commissioning space Teal Canvas offers, emotional perspective is just as important as physical perspective.

The season of life. The degree of contentment or longing. Our passions, relationships and memories.

All of this changes what we see in a work of art. It may even change what we see in the same work five or ten years from now.

Artist Rosalyn Drexler once said, “Any person who looks at a work, they don’t own the work, but they own what it means to them.”

I love that.

As I continue to live in the joy of my daughter, this painting by Wil Swink has become a favorite.

I see pure abandon. Freedom. The absolute physical expression of joy.

I see Gigi’s face as I carry her over the waves of the ocean.

As I try to hold onto this beautiful, fleeting season, I understand the painting from a perspective I simply could not have had before becoming her father.

This is why I love the commission space.

A commission begins with who you are and where you are in your life. Your passions, relationships, memories and the things holding meaning for you right now can all inform what an artist creates.

The finished work captures something deeply personal about this particular moment, while leaving room for its meaning to continue changing as you do.

I will commission a Wil Swink piece myself. And if it is anything like this one, as Gigi enters the world more independently, I’ll look back and think she started that leap years and years earlier.

There’s always more work.

Earlier this week, I had an all-day onsite meeting postponed at the last minute. A large commercial project. Disappointing. We’ll reschedule. It’s fine.

I could have filled the day with more work.

Instead, I went for a hike.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about something a very wise friend said to me. We were talking about our ability to experience awe and wonder in everyday life.

He looked at me, smiled, and said:

“Jay, when you go outside, look at a tree and just think, the tree is eating the light.”

So I went outside.

As I walked, I took these photographs and started thinking about the work of Jessica Wright. Her paintings create these beautiful, almost immersive views of nature. And because they can be commissioned, that feeling can be shaped around a particular space and brought into the places where we live every day.

The hike was a reset. I felt present. And the next morning, even the work I usually resist was met with a deeper appreciation.

I intend to keep thinking about the trees eating the light. How wondrous that is. And to keep looking for that same sense of awe in other parts of my life.

I hope you’re able to find some of it this weekend too, in moments big and small.

Playing in the studio. Experimenting to find something new, bold, different.

I love this glimpse into artist Jenny Reinhardt’s studio because it shows a part of the creative process we do not always get to see.

Not every day begins with a perfectly formed idea.

Sometimes it begins with playing. Testing materials. Trying something. Changing direction. Making a mess. Following an instinct just to see where it leads.

There is no pressure for every experiment to become a finished piece. The point is to remain curious long enough for something interesting to reveal itself.

That is exactly how the best ideas begin.

In art. In design. In life.

I love that Jenny allowed us to see a little bit of her day, whether the sky is yellow or blue.

And I love thinking that the next great idea could come from the messy, the silly, the unexpected.

Christopher Jeffries makes work that changes how we experience a space.

His handblown glass installations bring together color, movement and material in ways that feel sculptural and architectural. Each composition responds to its setting, its scale and the people who move through it.

That versatility is remarkable.

His work can transform a residential hallway, family room or outdoor wall. It can bring warmth and identity to a hotel, workplace or large commercial installation.

Christopher has this extraordinary ability to make glass feel alive in its surroundings.

Our company, Teal Canvas, began with a commissioned painting of our own.

In June 2020, Rachel, my co-founder, had just earned her MBA from the University of Michigan. (Go Blue!)

We were also preparing to get married, in a ceremony of just ten people, during an unimaginable year.

To celebrate our love and give shape to everything we had lost, both human and experiential, we commissioned an abstract painting from artist Tish Karl.

Tish invited us into the process: the palette, the feeling, and all the little decisions that would make the work distinctly ours.

We both love the color teal for instance.

The experience, and the joy of seeing an artist transform our ideas into something original and deeply personal, stayed with us.

So when we launched our company, the name felt obvious.

Teal Canvas.

Today, the painting hangs behind me on every Zoom with artists, collectors, designers, architects, hospitality professionals. It remains a conversation piece and a daily reminder of why we built this company.

“This is breathtakingly beautiful… my face hurts from smiling.”

The dream response to a commission.

When Carol and Mike relocated from their oceanfront home to an elegant new condo, they trusted the extraordinary Amy Peltier of Peltier Interiors to make the space feel entirely their own.

The entryway was quiet, but its job was significant. It would create the first impression of their new home.

Amy envisioned one vibrant artwork.

Together, we chose Antoinette Wysocki.

Antoinette, whose work can be found in collections worldwide, creates layered mixed-media pieces that are unmistakably hers, yet singular to each collector.

Her process begins with the collection of details that make a life feel like a life. Collector passions. Dates. Lyrics. Places. Private references. Beloved people and pets.

She then weaves them into the painting as “Easter eggs,” sometimes recognizable, sometimes more hidden.

Look closely and you may find the Chicago Cubs. Washington, DC. Birds taking flight. 

And that is just one small snapshot.

Throughout the full painting are so many pieces of Carol and Mike’s story, layered into a work that could belong to no one else.

The result is a time capsule. Lives well lived. And, through Amy’s vision, the visual beginning of their new home.

This is the painting that made Teal Canvas real. The one that validated the idea 💡

Our first five-figure commission.

It was year one. This crazy idea on how to disrupt the fine art space, make it more personal, more experiential.
Lean focally into the bespoke.

Tom West wanted to commission a vibrant, abstract landscape of Kiawah Island, South Carolina, his family’s favorite place.

He shared reference photographs that captured what he loved about it: the landscape, the color, the energy. It's a stunning place.

After reviewing quite a few artists, Tom chose to work with Rodger Schultz, whose layered, expressive brushwork felt perfect. A little reminiscent of Van Gogh, but Rodger’s style is entirely his own.

As the painting came together, we shared each new layer with Tom, making him part of the creative experience.

Tom and Rodger even had the opportunity to meet in person and discuss the piece in Rodger's studio.

It's always a treat when the geographical opportunity arises to meet face to face.

It was then beautifully framed and installed in Tom’s office outside of Washington, D.C.

Kiawah Island was brought home.

Our first significant commission.

The painting that made Teal Canvas something real.
