There’s always more work.

Earlier this week, I had an all-day onsite meeting postponed at the last minute. A large commercial project. Disappointing. We’ll reschedule. It’s fine.

I could have filled the day with more work.

Instead, I went for a hike.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about something a very wise friend said to me. We were talking about our ability to experience awe and wonder in everyday life.

He looked at me, smiled, and said:

“Jay, when you go outside, look at a tree and just think, the tree is eating the light.”

So I went outside.

As I walked, I took these photographs and started thinking about the work of Jessica Wright. Her paintings create these beautiful, almost immersive views of nature. And because they can be commissioned, that feeling can be shaped around a particular space and brought into the places where we live every day.

The hike was a reset. I felt present. And the next morning, even the work I usually resist was met with a deeper appreciation.

I intend to keep thinking about the trees eating the light. How wondrous that is. And to keep looking for that same sense of awe in other parts of my life.

Playing in the studio. Experimenting to find something new, bold, different.

I love this glimpse into artist Jenny Reinhardt’s studio because it shows a part of the creative process we do not always get to see.

Not every day begins with a perfectly formed idea.

Sometimes it begins with playing. Testing materials. Trying something. Changing direction. Making a mess. Following an instinct just to see where it leads.

There is no pressure for every experiment to become a finished piece. The point is to remain curious long enough for something interesting to reveal itself.

That is exactly how the best ideas begin.

In art. In design. In life.

I love that Jenny allowed us to see a little bit of her day, whether the sky is yellow or blue.

And I love thinking that the next great idea could come from the messy, the silly, the unexpected.

Christopher Jeffries makes work that changes how we experience a space.

His handblown glass installations bring together color, movement and material in ways that feel sculptural and architectural. Each composition responds to its setting, its scale and the people who move through it.

Our company, Teal Canvas, began with a commissioned painting of our own.

In June 2020, Rachel, my co-founder, had just earned her MBA from the University of Michigan. (Go Blue!)

We were also preparing to get married, in a ceremony of just ten people, during an unimaginable year.

To celebrate our love and give shape to everything we had lost, both human and experiential, we commissioned an abstract painting from artist Tish Karl.

Tish invited us into the process: the palette, the feeling, and all the little decisions that would make the work distinctly ours.

We both love the color teal for instance.

The experience, and the joy of seeing an artist transform our ideas into something original and deeply personal, stayed with us.

So when we launched our company, the name felt obvious.

Teal Canvas.

Today, the painting hangs behind me on every Zoom with artists, collectors, designers, architects, hospitality professionals. It remains a conversation piece and a daily reminder of why we built this company.

“This is breathtakingly beautiful… my face hurts from smiling.”

The dream response to a commission.

When Carol and Mike relocated from their oceanfront home to an elegant new condo, they trusted the extraordinary Amy Peltier of Peltier Interiors to make the space feel entirely their own.

The entryway was quiet, but its job was significant. It would create the first impression of their new home.

Amy envisioned one vibrant artwork.

Together, we chose Antoinette Wysocki.

Antoinette, whose work can be found in collections worldwide, creates layered mixed-media pieces that are unmistakably hers, yet singular to each collector.

Her process begins with the collection of details that make a life feel like a life. Collector passions. Dates. Lyrics. Places. Private references. Beloved people and pets.

She then weaves them into the painting as “Easter eggs,” sometimes recognizable, sometimes more hidden.

Look closely and you may find the Chicago Cubs. Washington, DC. Birds taking flight. 

And that is just one small snapshot.

Throughout the full painting are so many pieces of Carol and Mike’s story, layered into a work that could belong to no one else.

The result is a time capsule. Lives well lived. And, through Amy’s vision, the visual beginning of their new home.

This is the painting that made Teal Canvas real. The one that validated the idea 💡

Our first five-figure commission.

It was year one. This crazy idea on how to disrupt the fine art space, make it more personal, more experiential.
Lean focally into the bespoke.

Tom West wanted to commission a vibrant, abstract landscape of Kiawah Island, South Carolina, his family’s favorite place.

He shared reference photographs that captured what he loved about it: the landscape, the color, the energy. It's a stunning place.

After reviewing quite a few artists, Tom chose to work with Rodger Schultz, whose layered, expressive brushwork felt perfect. A little reminiscent of Van Gogh, but Rodger’s style is entirely his own.

As the painting came together, we shared each new layer with Tom, making him part of the creative experience.

Tom and Rodger even had the opportunity to meet in person and discuss the piece in Rodger's studio.

It's always a treat when the geographical opportunity arises to meet face to face.

It was then beautifully framed and installed in Tom’s office outside of Washington, D.C.

Kiawah Island was brought home.

Our first significant commission.

I have three great passions in my life.

Family and friends.
Teal Canvas.
Music.

When those things overlap, that’s the sweet spot. That rare moment when the universe seems right.

So when my two-year-old daughter, Gigi, began showing a passion for music, this fella’s heart grew a little bigger.

Then she started asking the names of songs. And it grew again.

Then she started requesting them by name. And it nearly burst.

And objectively, fine subjectively, this girl has taste.

“Blackbird”. “Landslide”.

Randy Newman arrived through repeated Toy Story viewings.

“Flutes” and “Idioteque” made her want to dance in circles with me around the kitchen.

Five songs have become repeat requests, and the playlist keeps growing.

I love attaching the musical to the visual. It's a bit of a mental commission. Bespoke.

I see a combination of the classical and the contemporary.

Sebastien Johnson, an artist we are so proud to represent, embodies that beautifully.

Classically trained in France, New York and Chicago, Sebastien creates work that feels entirely contemporary, with a technique that belongs to antiquity.

His newest series explores the energy of the crowd.

The way individual passions become a shared experience. The way a crowd turns common interest into connection. The emotion inside both its roar or the complete silence of thousands sharing the same intimate awe.

We just felt it during the World Cup.

I feel a version of it with Gigi whenever we sing together. Whenever we dance.

I feel it at concerts when thousands of us sing in unison, tear up in unison or simply look on in deep appreciation.

I hope you know that feeling. That song. That goal.

One day we will commission Sebastien ourselves to honor that first concert that changes the way Gigi sees music.

Over the weekend, I attended my high school reunion. I won’t say how many years, but it starts with a 3 and ends with a 0.

Someone brought our senior yearbook, and there it was: the quote I had chosen. I have absolutely no memory of choosing it.

That baby-faced boy could not have known what the next thirty years would hold. Nearly two decades working in healthcare. A complete reinvention. A family. Teal Canvas.

But somehow, he seems to have known something. Time really is a flat circle.

The morning after the reunion, my daughter Gigi stood at the edge of the pool and did this completely on her own (mid-reel, now you have to watch it!).

Joy, trust, and wonder.

It made me think about the work of Teal Canvas artist Wil Swink and the way he captures children before the world tells them to be more careful, more serious, less free.

And it made me think about what art offers all of us.

Perhaps that is part of what art offers us. The opportunity to reconnect with something that may have quieted, but never really left. Something that reflects who we are at our core, what moves is, a part of ourselves ready to be rediscovered.

I remain grateful for the weekend, old friends, deep conversations, and a teenage me who foretold that something meaningful was on the way, even if it took me twenty-five years to find it.

I was in my twenties.

Traveling alone. One of those nights when big thoughts meet a solo hotel room.

Maybe a drink or two in.

I randomly turned on “Once,” a quietly beautiful film about a struggling Dublin street musician, played by Glen Hansard, who meets a Czech immigrant and pianist, played by Markéta Irglová.

Over a handful of days, they create music together, their creative spirits recognizing something in the other. A love letter expressed in notes rather than gestures, in melodies rather than physical intimacy.

The soundtrack they created together is stunningly gorgeous. A masterpiece.

Its anchor song, “Falling Slowly,” is crushing in the best of ways. The knowledge that things are fleeting, but the moments of creative recognition remain.

I have loved Glen Hansard ever since, through the “Once” soundtrack, his solo work, The Frames, and The Swell Season.

Nearly twenty years later, I have Rachel and Gigi, the loves of my life. I have Teal Canvas, a means for artists and collectors to collaborate and create something beautiful and meaningful together.

My life is so different now.

Glen Hansard died Wednesday in a motorcycle accident. He was 56.

I remembered that hotel room. I am grateful that his work found me in that moment and that he left such an extraordinary catalogue of himself behind.

When I think of “Falling Slowly,” I see this gorgeous piece by Teal Canvas artist Aissulu Kadyrzhanova.

Minimal. Beautiful. Lonely, yet somehow belonging completely within its space. A body. A creative form. Separate from and connected to its space at once.

And this is what I love about art, whether visual or musical. It has a way of moving us, making us feel seen, and giving shape to feelings.

If you are painting, designing, working, or simply sitting, put on the soundtrack. It is worth it.

For years, this Instagram has been almost entirely paintings and the incredible artists who created them.

A gallery grid. A wall of beautiful art.

I love that. It’s why I founded Teal Canvas. I love the wonderful interplay between fine artistry and the collaborative experience of commissioning art.

But something has been missing:
More passion. More perspective. More human connection. More of the stories and experiences. A stronger point of view.

For now, I’m kind of breaking the fourth wall. Emerging from the gallery. Stopping by to say hi.
