The 2025/2026 school year was full of remarkable achievements for the Dorothy Ge**er Strings Program. More than 300 students made impressive musical progress, resulting in a variety of wonderful performances—from individual students in the solo recitals to hundreds of students performing together in the Fall Play-In and Spring Showcase.

DGSP students earned numerous honors, including awards in the annual Practice Challenge and the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Young Artist Competition. The Dorothy Ge**er Youth Orchestra, made up of the program’s most advanced students, presented impressive concerts and toured Detroit, where they studied directly with members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

The year was preceded by a summer filled with fun and learning, including advanced students exploring “The Art of the Gig” and participants in the Summertime Strings Festival enjoying outings to Pirate’s Cove and Northern Lights Recreation.

Together, these experiences added up to a year filled with achievement, growth, and lasting memories.

A good reminder for parents and students alike: musical growth doesn't happen overnight. Encourage the effort, celebrate the progress, and remember that perfection isn't the goal. 🎶

The DGSP Annual Spring Showcase 2026 brought together DGSP students, along with many family and friends, for an evening filled with standout moments that will be remembered for years to come.

The program reflected both the growth of our students and the strength of our community. A few highlights from this year’s performance:

✨ Gandalf himself led the full DGSP in “The Stars Twinkle Over Middle-Earth,” a creative fusion of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star with themes from The Lord of the Rings—a whimsical and cinematic opening to the concert.

🎻 2026 GLCO Young Artist winners Blaise Sytsma-Reed and Eeva Rintala performed Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins, accompanied by "The Originals"—a special ensemble of students, alumni, and parents who were part of the launch of DGYO in 2018.

🎼 The Junior Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Ryellen Joaquim, rose to an extraordinary challenge with an advanced arrangement of the Finale of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, featuring woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

And more memorable moments throughout the program:
• A beautiful family ensemble featuring six members of the Allerding family performing Perpetual Motion together
• DGYO delivering an inspiring performance of the Finale of Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 (“The Romantic”)
• The traditional closing of the concert—Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, bringing the entire performance to a celebratory finish

This showcase was a testament to the dedication of our students, the support of their families, and the collaborative spirit that defines the Dorothy Ge**er Strings Program. Thanks to all who attended!
