It’s Not Trash: Reclaiming and Transforming
Opening Reception
Thursday, September 17
5:30-7:30pm
Presented in partnership with the Reuse Alliance and Recology San Francisco and Santa Rosa, It’s Not Trash: Reclaiming and Transforming honors artists who repurpose discarded materials to create work centered on sustainability, storytelling, and community restoration.
In the Main Gallery, this exhibition combines a selection of 40 artists from Recology San Francisco’s Artist in Residence (AIR) Program and five invited artists from the Bay Area. All participating artists created their work from
reclaimed materials, shifting what is perceived of as “trash” to reimagined art objects.
In our North Gallery, It’s Not Trash continues with Strictly Local: Piecing It Together in Sonoma County where students, community members, and individual artists bring together a diverse range of voices and approaches. By considering a new purpose for found fabric, plastic bags, cardboard, clothing, e-waste, and other overlooked items, these works combine everyday remnants with creative intention, inviting viewers to reconsider assumptions about value and use. This exhibition encourages us to question our relationship with what we consume and discard.
Join us for a special opening reception September 17 where participants from Sonoma Community Center’s Trashion Fashion event will be wearing and strutting some of their creations made from recycled materials and found objects. Guests are encouraged to wear their best Trashion Fashion.
