Artist Sachiyo Takahashi/Nekaa Lab TAKAHASHI Sachiyo fuses shinnai-bushi, a traditional form of Japanese sung storytelling with contemporary puppetry
Performing under her authorized stage name Okamoto Miya, Sachiyo Takahashi brings this music to life, while her collaborators, NYC-based puppeteers Rowan Magee and Emma Wiseman, animate the stories with original puppets and innovative puppetry techniques.
Together, they present two tales—one whimsical, the other haunting: a heartwarming fable of friendship between a mischievous, shape-shifting tanuki trickster and a lonely old man—One Night in Winter—and a bone-chilling classic Japanese ghost story of love and betrayal—The Peony Lantern. Performed in shinnai-bushi and based on works by Grand Master Okamoto Bunya (1895–1996), these stories unfold through rustic, lyrical shamisen music and evocative visual storytelling.
By blending music, puppetry, and striking visuals, Shinnai Meets Puppetry bridges Japanese traditions and contemporary theatrical expression, celebrating the timeless joy of storytelling and captivating audiences of all ages. This performance features live Japanese musical storytelling (with English subtitles) by Okamoto Miya (a.k.a. Sachiyo Takahashi), puppetry, and original sound effects.

A work-in-progress puppet theatre performance by long-time Shake/NYSPF artist Ash Winkfield æ [ash]] , WATER WALKER is inspired by the historical events of the Igbo Landing of 1803, following the journey of one man as he tries to make his way home after being stolen from the shores of Africa.

Water Walker is an exploration of agency utilizing object movement, table top, and shadow puppetry in collaboration with innovative set design and original music to transport the audience along the emotional journey of forced captivity.

Ash Winkfield (xe/xem/xyr/they) is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in theater and the puppetry arts. Over the last decade, they have performed puppetry, theater, and vocal performance all over the world. Winkfield specializes in new and devised work presented in New York City, and has toured domestically and internationally with Basil Twist (Rite of Spring, Sister’s Follies, Book of Mountains and Seas), The Walk with Little Amal, Shake on the Lake (The Othello Project, Songs & Sweet Airs, Mxbeth, Henry V), and Josh Rice Projects (Kayfabe). Winkfield has directed Alva Rogers’ “The Harlem Doll Palace”, co-directed Midnight Radio Show’s “Mia M.I.A.”, and puppet directed TheaterWorks production of Clifford the Big Red Dog. Most recently, Winkfield was featured in Yaa Samar Dance Theater’s World Premiere of Gathering - a dance theater work which centers around a Palestinian woman’s memories of love and war in her final moments of life.

An amuse bouche of puppetry! A variety of brand new, bite-sized works of puppet theatre! New York State Puppet Festival is hosting a regional puppet slam to highlight the puppetry being done throughout Western New York, Finger Lakes and adjacent regions. We’re inviting puppeteers to spend an evening performing to peers, puppeteers, and the public.

SUBMISSIONS ARE OPEN!

Do you have a short piece of puppet theater you're working on? Check out the application link above and submit by June 15!

The puppet slam will highlight pieces up to 10 minutes long. All styles of puppetry are welcome to apply. We are grateful for the support of the Puppet Slam Network 💫

Each show will receive a $200 honorarium. We can't wait to see your work!
