❕We're incredibly excited to announce our next call for art, or in this case music. Auditory Artists, this one's for you! ❕🎶

‘Mixtape’ is a show that endeavors to showcase the interrelationship of music and art. Each artist in their media will expound upon what is perhaps the most tried and true genre of song; the ‘Love Song’.

Musicians will first have the opportunity to submit a piece of music or sound that they feel best encapsulates the idea of love. Following these musical entries, fine artists will be paired with a submitted piece of music, and have the opportunity to respond to it with their visual art.

👀 Be on the lookout for a 'Mixtape' call for visual artists very soon! 👀

❕CALL FOR ENTRY: Madonna and Child ❕

Dead Lemon Society is excited to announce the second issue of our zine, Main Squeeze. We are now accepting entries for Issue 2: “Madonna and Child”. 🤱🏻🤱🏼🤱🏽🤱🏿 DEADLINE Dec 1st, 12am

The Madonna and Child historically refers to works of art depicting the Virgin Mary and child Jesus, and though traditionally linked to the church and worship, this iconic format has expanded out into the secular world. With this issue, we’re eager to see different explorations of this concept, and perhaps all things maternal. Submissions can be linked through visual relationships or ideas alone, can be secular or religious, etc.

We welcome submissions of painting, drawing, digital art, photography, collage, poems, short stories, etc.

With protests for the protection of black lives in full force, we have decided to extend our deadline to submit to our online exhibition Inside/Outside to June 22nd. We recognize that many of you are actively attending protests and/or involved in the process of learning, educating, donating, mourning- and we encourage everyone to fully commit themselves to this revolution and to those actions. We realize that many people may be looking at the theme of this show through a new lens as it focused primarily on stay at home orders due to a pandemic, and now many of you have been mobilized to an issue far more pressing. We’ve seen curfews now enforced by an oppressive government and police force in order to silence you, rather than the stay at home orders meant to keep you safe from covid19- the original focus of the show.

Because of this, we want to really stress that our original theme is open even more to your interpretation, and your submissions can allow you to work through whatever you are feeling at this moment. The *only* guidelines for this show are that we would like a photo of your work alone, a photo of your work displayed in your home, and a photo of your work displayed in a space outside of your home. We have already received some incredible submissions that we’re excited to share through this online show, and know that art is essential now and always. Submissions can be sent through this link, where you can also read our original call for art.

We stand in solidarity with those who are speaking up and taking action against police brutality, systemic racism and inequality, and believe a revolution is long overdue. We encourage our supporters to consider donating to Philadelphia Community Bail Fund , YAS Project Philly, and One Pennsylvania to name a few local organizations, and welcome everyone to tag other organizations in need in the comments of this post. Look out for each other everyone.

About Dead.Lem

Dead Lemon Society is born out of a hope for fostering a fresh creative community in the Greater Philadelphia Area. It exists to provide a contemporary space for burgeoning artists to develop new creative relationships and ideas. A major goal for each event hosted by Dead.Lem is to strive to present not just visual art, but performance and musical acts; blending different art forms together to speak to a single idea. This collective is operated by co-founders LiAnn Natter and Kelly Schultz, who have a strong focus on providing representation for young creatives, particularly focusing on female artists, to expand upon and bring the messthetics and woman-friendly art culture that has flourished in Philadelphia out in to the surrounding suburban and rural areas of Pennsylvania. The group believes that by showcasing work in alternative spaces, it can become more accessible to those both within and outside the arts community. Effectively, taking the gallery out of the gallery, can be a means to further the reach of works.
