I'm teaching a workshop on creating your own phenology wheel for the month of June. It's a great way to learn more about the natural world, and to get started working in watercolor or to become more comfortable with the medium.

Your wheel can be neat and controlled like mine, or painted more loosely. You can add a section for each day of the month, or divide it into weeks if you're pressed for time.

Some quick landscape studies- I’m getting excited to teach a class in pastel landscapes soon. Here I worked from black & white photos, using a different main color in each.@

All these plants (and a couple of insects) are from the same small shoreline area off of the Elephant Trail and Lake Nockmixon State Park. The total area is roughly 20'x20' feet, and I went back multiple times over the month of August. Over the three weeks that I worked on this, I came to realize that I couldn't include every plant that interested me in this one watercolor. I like the idea of putting separate watercolors on the same page, making decisions about placement as I go along- something I love about nature journaling, but using a unified theme. Keeps things fresh!

Clockwise: Cattails, Blue-fronted dancer dragonfly, Evening primrose, Day Lillies, Skipper (butterfly), Jewelweed, Forget-me-nots, White water-lilies and in the center Mud plantain, Pickerelweed and a greatly magnified Small water-pepper.

All these plants thrive in moist soil.

Hedgerow in November
Pastel 16”x20”

I've just spent a month on this and need a break from it. It may be finished, but I'm not sure right now.

There is a local farm that rents land from Blooming Glen Mennonite Church, and people are permitted to walk on their trails. I spend so much time there, watching the changes of the seasons. Once I googled a view of the farm on Google Earth and my red car was the only one in their parking lot.
