What makes art so great is that it is simultaneously a microcosm of one person’s individual experience and an expression of universal humanity that we all experience. Casually Homicidal, and all of the other books on this carousel, was created from the synthesis of my personal trauma and the way I make meaning of the world—but also, it speaks to something that lives inside all of us. It’s this lens that allows us, both as writers and readers, to peer through a keyhole into the ballroom of the divine—the energy and indomitable human spirit that connects us. If you don’t like my keyhole, just take a step to the right and find another. Good thing they’ll all lead us to the same place.

Sorry for getting esoteric on what’s supposed to be a funny meme post, but that’s why I feel so strongly about why generative artificial intelligence—large language models—has no place in creative endeavors. It’s because they are unable to make meaning in the same way we are. It is predictive algorithms—ones without true autonomy or self-awareness. It only seems like it does, because that’s how we’ve programmed these LLMs to speak. Its only by listening to the voices in your head and exploring the 3-4 highly personal thematic narratives that haunt your psyche will you write something that’s not only personally fulfilling, but something will allow you to connect with others on that meaningful level we all yearn for.

Been busy doing a whole lotta nothing✨ That’s not totally true. I finished the first *real* draft of NBTTD (the zombie book I’ve been working on periodically since 2020; title forthcoming) recently, and I’ve spent a good chunk of vacation doing paper-based edits on it, which involves printing out the whole thing, reading it through, and marking it up with various color-coded gel pens. Paper-based edits are an integral part of any publishing process for me, since transferring the story to a new medium and seeing it printed out on paper and ink helps me get a better perspective and scope of the story. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend it! As for color coding: red is for copyedits, blue is for line edits, purple is developmental edits, and orange is formatting edits.

Oh yeah, about vacation. We were up in the Michigan UP for the second time. We did some stuff alongside doing a whole lotta nothing (hiking, a boat and lighthouse tour) but the highlight was probably the food OMG. We had lasagna that was a whole meal, creme brûlée, authentic butter chicken, and, of course, Culver’s! or whatever.

I also disliked and really didn’t understand Evan and Ringer when I was a teen, but this reread has deepened my love and understanding for them, which is great. Because of who they are and who they become, they’re tough to empathize with sometimes, but now that I’m older they make so much more sense to me.
