CHEATING @ CHESS

The Pensacola Chess Club
Meets every Thursday and every Sunday at the Books-A-Million on 6235 N. Davis Highway.

I was at the Pensacola Chess Club a few weeks ago. (I did not stay too long - I could not readily get a game and I had things to do.) I heard this young man - I don't think he was 15 - tell his friends: "Cheating at chess is a relatively new problem. Its caused by technology!" (Then he proceeded to show his friends links and stories on his laptop. I was covertly peeking over his shoulder ... so I saw some of the stories that they were looking at. One included the famous case of a FIDE GM who stashed his phone in the restroom. He made frequent trips to the toilet ... presumably to look at his phone. He was caught ... and banned from tournament play.) And I have heard people say this kind of thing a lot recently.

CONTRARY TO POPULAR OPINION ... cheating at chess is a very old problem!! (It goes back centuries!)

Here is the best overall article on cheating in chess that I have ever seen:
Inside the chess cheating scandal and the fight for the soul of the game - ESPN https://share.google/OjokJpP6kkrlKHPYv.
********************************************
I decided - after I posted this - to add my part of the story.

I was at the World Open in 1993. (I was playing in the section for players under 2200. My rating had dropped below 2200 ... some falsely said I was purposely sandbagging, and I won a prize ... but I had many friends who played in the top/open section; I followed the Open section intently.) Moshe Khatena played in that tournament, you can find some of his games in just about every database.

The article - while technically correct about some of the details about John Von Neumann - does NOT tell the whole story!!!!!

(To be continued.)

Addendum: My account of the cheating incident at the 1993 World Open.

As I have already stated, I was at the 1993 World Open in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I IMMEDIATELY noticed one player ... because he was so unusual and out of place!!

His name? "John Von Neumann." [Even my friend - Joe Hodge, the former night manager of the Manhattan Chess Club - knew right away ... that this guy's name was fake! (J. Von Neumann was a deceased and famous Dutch mathematician.)
A.) He was a black male ... with dreadlocks.
B.) He spoke with with an accent ... to me, he sounded like he was born in Jamaica.
C.) He had ZERO chess skill! He wandered by the post-mortem of one my games. I asked him - setting him up for failure & exposure - to suggest a move. The move that he suggested was NOT EVEN POSSIBLE!! (It was an illegal move.)
D.) At the chess board, he looked bored. He picked his nose, twirled a length of hair, kept examining his fingernails, stared at the ceiling, etc. In short ... he never even looked at the chess board.
E.) I immediately went to the TD's with the announcement: "This guy is cheating! He MUST be playing chess by remote control!"
(Titled players, {FM's, IM's, even GM's} ... told me: "You are crazy!" Or: "There is no proof that he is cheating."
F.) He became the hottest topic of conversation in the entire tournament. "Who is this guy - who has no record of ever playing in a USCF rated tournament before - who is killing titled players?"
G.) I used to play and/or attend the defunct tournament: held annually in Mobile, AL. I got to know ALL the programmers of various chess-playing machines and programs. (Like Fidelity Electronics' famous "Chess Chalkenger." When I was stationed at Minot A.F.B. in the 1980's ... I continuously honed my chess skills by practicing my game against my Chess Challenger.) When the tournament was over ... who should show up to help Von Neumann claim his prize? One of the country's top programmer of a chess machine. (I won't use his name.)

I ... CONTINUOUSLY!!! ... went to the tournament organizers and directors with my case that Von Neumann was a hoax and a chess cheat. I noticed him fooling with a buzzing device in his pocket ... very early on. He also kept tapping on his thigh, I suspected that he had a remote keypad ... I routinely used these devices in the missile field ... taped to his leg.

But the real kicker? In the last round ... the air conditioning system failed completely. EVERYONE ... (eventually) was soaked in sweat. I noticed that Von Neumann had like an electronic antenna taped to his back ... once his back was wet, you could see the device quite clearly. (When his thin shirt was wet with sweat ... it was almost transparent!)

But the final straw was in the last round. After I began to drag TD's over to see the device on his back ... he disappeared to his hotel room ... presumably to get rid of his electronic devices. He now had to receive his moves via messenger. (Several times, I witnessed a third party ... bringing Von Neumann a piece of paper. I saw him read it - and then walked over to the trash and threw it away. (I fished it out of the trash and saved it.) I took the incriminating evidence to Mr. Bill Goichberg, the main TD & organizer of the tournament. Thereafter, Von Neumann would read the slip of paper ... pop it into his mouth and eat it! (The slip of paper - that I retrieved from the trash - was in long algebraic notation. It was also how Von Neumann recorded his chess game.)

By the time the tournament was over and it was time to pay out prizes ... suspicions had been aroused. When asked to solve a simple mate in two moves, (MY IDEA!!!); Von Neumann continually failed to solve the simplest mates. He also kept looking at the programmer because he clearly did not know what to do.

The good news? The story has a happy ending! Von Neumann (and his prommer boss) were denied any prize at all. They appealed to the U.S. Chess Federation. (The USCF people called me... I gave a detailed description ... over several long phone calls ... of what had occurred.) In the end, the appeal failed as well.

SOMETIMES ... life can truly be weird, wonderful ... and much funnier than fiction!

I met a young lad about a year or two ago at a local chess tournament. (I think he was six or seven at the time.) He is almost 10 now. He sends me emails and even calls me from time to time.

He told me the other day - on the phone - "Hey Master A.J.! I have a great idea: why dont you make a web page or a video on the game that I sent you?" (The great game ... won by Soassky in the Soviet Championship Tournament - with Soassky playing a King's Gambit.)

LOL Hahaha (I already have.)

NEAR THE TOP OF THE PAGE ... is a highlighted link to my chess video.

The ratings are a VERY conservative estimate, especially in lieu of what the ratings were (are) in the year, 2001.  (Spassky and Bronstein were both easily in the Top ten when this game was played.)

I was at my chiropractors office today. I saw an article (FEB 2026) in the "Rotary" magazine. (Pg. #26) It was all about the explosion of chess in India.

https://share.google/aimode/SLq5ropQGzK23mDPf

I learned something I did not know ...

But, first ... I remember a number of years before, someone asked me: "How many GM's does the nation of India have?" (This was before the internet.) Back then, the answer - to the question (above) was 2 or 3. (You could look it up in the FIDE Yearbook.)

Today, as the article stated, India has more than NINETY (90+!!) GM's. Mind-blowing!

I turned 68 recently. I will blink a few times ... and I will be 70. (This hardly seems possible!)

One of my favorite players was GM Walter Briwne. [https://share.google/I7QVaw2bx4twKlWkh]

Does ANYONE (out there) remember how dominant a player he really was? When i was just a young pup - and a relative fish - he seemed to be ALWAYS winning chess tournaments! Especially the big ones!!!

We met later in life ... and became friends. We hung out a few times too, he even caught a ride with me once to his next tournament. (I guess he stayed up all night ... fleecing chumps at poker ... and missed his flight. I was on leave and a huge fanboy, so I was tickled when he asked me for a ride. It meant changing my plans, but I happily did so.)

RIP Walter Browne.

Walter Shawn Browne was an Australian-born American chess and poker player. Awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 1970, he won the U.S. Chess Championship six times.

I played an extremely interesting chess game a few days ago.

I was White, and my internet opponent's name was something like "Z-trap." (It was followed by several random numbers.)

The game was THREE MINUTE ... with NO increment!! Short of time - maybe 08 seconds left on his clock - Black promoted his Pawn. (And was mated in three moves.)

I felt elated by this game. I feel - very strongly - that ... for most of the game ... my opponent was using a chess engine. (There were too many pauses - nearly every move. He even paused when I captured his Queen, any real human recaptures immediately. He wasn't using the direct interface ... that is too easy to spot. He was probably using the "hint mode" or the "Split-screen" method.) He fell apart when he had to move quickly, he went from playing near perfect chess to playing like a "one-thousand" player.

The game ... before his blunder ... was a simple draw, all he had to do was to continue to check my King - with his Rook - from behind.

This is my chess course for beginners. (MANY PEOPLE have emailed telling me that they could NOT find this page on the web.) I apologize. My websites are HUGE/MANY! The original geocities site was closed in 2009. I moved all the pages to my own domain.

I was in the process of fixing all the broken links - a monstrously large task, that I never finished - when we were evicted from Chapin's Landing in December of 2015. And we were NOT evicted because we could not pay the rent. (Because of my autistic daughter. A manager told me that: "We hate her guts and want that wilda** b**** gone!!" They also told me that we did not deserve to live in a nice place and belonged out in the woods - in a tent - away from "normal" people!)
😭

My web page(s) in this chess course took several years to create. It won several awards.

An EXTREMELY COMPLICATED GAME ... of ONE MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

**********************************
I am 67.

I have been playing chess since I was 4.

I have been playing the Dragon since I was 8 or 9.

When I was a teenager, my ONLY defense against 1 e4, (in OTB tournaments) was the Sicilian Dragon!!!

Before I got evicted from Chapin's Landing, (Dec. 3rd or 4th, 2015); I owned every book that was in print on the Dragon!! (And I had deeply studied ALL of them!)

For 25+ YEARS NOW ... I have been studying the Dragon ... with the computer.

In the 1980's ... only TWO masters in the USA regularly used the Dragon in tournament play! (Myself and Senior Master Stuart Rachels. BTW, Stuart once TIED FOR 1ST PLACE in the U.S. Championship.)

My knowledge of this opening ... has NOT been cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OnlyIcan (2360) played NM lifemasteraj (2171) in a casual Bullet (1+0) game of chess. OnlyIcan resigned after 32 moves. Click to replay, analyse, and discuss the game!
