The Hyottoko mask originated in the Edo period (1603–1868), evolving from earlier Kyogen theater masks from the Muromachi period (1336–1573) and rural folk traditions. Its name derives from hi otoko (fire man), referring to the act of blowing through a bamboo tube to stoke hearth fires, which explains the mask's signature puckered mouth and asymmetrical features.

The Hyottoko mask is often paired with the female Okame or Otafuku mask, symbolizing balance, joy, and prosperity. While sometimes labeled a yokai or fire god in modern contexts, it remains primarily a figure of humor and resilience in Japanese folklore and performance art.
