😬

When I first started audio engineering I was a pretty avid pc user but I wasn’t doing anything more than homework and playing games. After 3 pc’s died or had issues I finally looked into getting an older MacBook Pro. I bought a dented refurbished one and things just worked. It allowed me, for the most part, to just focus on creating and recording. I’m super excited to make this investment again in a computer that will last a long time and hopefully provide me with all the power I need as an audio engineer🎛

Drums are done for the EP! Nerdy audio time!

9 mics on the kit, two spaced overheads LA120s, snare top and bottom SM57s, e604s on toms, Shure Beta52 on the kick in, Sennheiser e835 on hihat and finally the AT4081 active ribbon about 4 feet from the kit pointed toward the snare. I’ll do my best to remember to post some clips as I am working on it this week so you can hear how good it sounds.

What’s mics do you use for guitars? I’m recording scratch tracks for . I used to just use a guitar di or a one mic situation, but scratch tracks are a great opportunity to mess with tones that could spark ideas and could end up on the final song. I’ve got the SM57 right at the cone catching highs, the AT4081 as the foundational mic for this setup and I also have a warm 47jr as a room mic about 7 feet away in Omni mode. Also want to note that I chose to leave a few inches between the mics and the speaker grill. Sounds more natural to me😊

Pedro The Lion- “Havasu” 2022 Polyvinyl Records

Favorite Song: First Drum Set

This is the 2nd of a series of albums centered around places David Bazan grew up in. This is definitely the more somber, dissonant record of the 2nd so far. If you’re like me you come to David’s music or PTL for good rock music, but stay for the personal campfire stories told in Dave’s low, grumbly voice. This album provides many moments where you get insight into David’s thoughts on not wanting to move, adjusting to a new school, discovering the drums and love. This album really captures the nervous energy of being in middle school and trying to fit in. This album has a tinge of 80s triumphant energy in songs like “Teenage Sequencer”, (which sounds like a slowed down “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, but half way through the story of young love is cut short and the protagonist is left crushed and confused. This album overall makes me think of my own middle school experience. It was both wonderful as your world gets bigger, but also so uncomfortable. I think this album captures that energy in a fondness for what we’ve accomplished by surviving it. I’m looking forward to diving deeper into the lyrics and I’m really eager to hear what he does next. Go listen to this!

Picked up this Peavey Bandit a month or so back. Can you guess the price?

Came with a pretty dead speaker which is probably why it was so cheap. That or they didn’t jump the preamp out into the power amp. I replaced the speaker with a Jensen C12N in hopes of a more fendery sound and I’m so happy with the results. This reverb on this amp is so beautiful and responsive. This is a perfect counterpart to my usual 410 Peavey Classic.

Mogwai- “Come on Die Young” 1999 Chemical Underground

Favorite Song: “Helps Both Ways”

If you’re like me and struggle to focus while trying to read this album is your new best friend. I have a really hard time sitting down with a book and not getting distracted by sounds or things happening. When I was in middle school and had to do reading assignments I would listen to this album on repeat. Theres something about the calmness of the instrumental songs that makes it so approachable and appealing to my brain as I am reading, but once you get about halfway through the record takes a turn into more “wall of sound” moments. Somehow it always managed to match with intense parts of the books I had to read and I would always start to read really fast and get so excited. To be in that moment where songs like “Ex-Cowboy” would blow up. This album is dark and dramatic and I love it for that. It’s practically all instrumental but it has so much character from different drum performances, guitar tones that shift from clean and round to loose fuzz. Give this a try with a good book! Listen to this!
