Favorite Song: First Drum Set
This is the 2nd of a series of albums centered around places David Bazan grew up in. This is definitely the more somber, dissonant record of the 2nd so far. If you’re like me you come to David’s music or PTL for good rock music, but stay for the personal campfire stories told in Dave’s low, grumbly voice. This album provides many moments where you get insight into David’s thoughts on not wanting to move, adjusting to a new school, discovering the drums and love. This album really captures the nervous energy of being in middle school and trying to fit in. This album has a tinge of 80s triumphant energy in songs like “Teenage Sequencer”, (which sounds like a slowed down “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, but half way through the story of young love is cut short and the protagonist is left crushed and confused. This album overall makes me think of my own middle school experience. It was both wonderful as your world gets bigger, but also so uncomfortable. I think this album captures that energy in a fondness for what we’ve accomplished by surviving it. I’m looking forward to diving deeper into the lyrics and I’m really eager to hear what he does next. Go listen to this!
