Personal opinion rant for my music lovers:
I think a lot of albums today are too long and not being audited before release.
So many albums are releasing with 18+ songs now. Often times, that’s just too much because most albums aren’t concept albums anymore. They’re just a compilation of songs that are meant to catch the listeners ear and get traction on tik tok or streaming platforms rather than challenge the listener.
And that’s okay; different music serves different purposes. But the problem is it’s too much to sift thru at one time and songs that are incredible get lost from track to track. Because the listener starts to get exhausted halfway thru the album. And what could be an incredible song doesn’t hit the same later in the album when you’ve heard 15 songs in a similar theme or experimental tracks before it.
Exhibit A: Donda by Kanye West.
THIS ALBUM HAS 32 SONGS ON IT. Some are the same songs with alternate versions. If this album was cut down to being half as long, this would be an incredible album. With songs like Hurricane and Keep My Spirit Alive, 24, Come to Life, Jonah, Pure Souls, Believe What I Say, and Jail, it sounded like there was a clear vision for this album. But there’s so much filler that I feel was unnecessary, those song get lost in the shuffle. And not even necessarily other BAD songs, just not cohesive with the rest such as Tell the Vision, Junya, Never Abandon Your Family, or the infamous Donda Chant to name a few. If this album was audited and cut down to 15 or 16 songs, it would be a top 4 Kanye Album. Maybe that’s debatable, but it would undoubtedly have made that album so much better and cohesive.
Just a Friday music thought ✌🏼♥️
