My shelves are filling up with pieces waiting to be fired in the kiln! I wish I had a newer kiln so I could start making more pottery and have consistent glazes šŸ‘€ā€¦

Awaiting to be fired in the kiln!

Some small cracks but I am hopeful it will hold up going from clay to ceramic.

Stay til the end for a surprise! šŸ˜‚ This was my first ever Raku firing and it was an amazing experience for my last night of class at the DSM Art Center. In short you fire bisque ware in a special kiln that ramps temperature very quickly, then at peak temp you pull the piece out and can apply a number of techniques. Some chose to plunge their pieces into trash cans full of combustible materials and smother the oxygen by covering them in wet towels. With glazes applied it can give very unique and varying effects. I chose to do no glaze and instead burn horse hair onto the surface of the vessels which gives it a one of a kind, wiggly pattern. I used horse hair from my grandparents horses and then gave them to them as a gift!

I tried to throw this cake stand in one piece instead of attaching two together. The result was a very thick T intersection and an S crack in the plate. I’m definitely going to try this technique again and hopefully yield some better results šŸ‘
