"This very old baby Buffalo Kachina is from the collection at the Museum of Man in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. This is the third time I've painted him, from different angles. He's always a challenge, and always a pleasure to paint. While old Buffalo Kachinas are quite rare, there a lot of modern versions, but none of them have the presence or personality these older ones have."

“A RARITY (SO FAR)

Flowers are not a frequent subject on this blog. There is no good reason that I can think of. They are fun to paint. They’re popular. I photograph them a lot, and I’ve painted them much more frequently when working in watercolor. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll paint them more often in the year ahead.-John

“I awoke to these beautiful, towering clouds this morning. After yesterday’s and last nights rain, this was a pleasant surprise. Cumulus clouds and palm trees have always made a great combination in my eyes.” John

“This might be or have been the home of a ranch foreman and his family. Surrounded by Cottonwoods, Chamisa and low lying Juniper, not to mention the occasional rattlesnake. His children might be home schooled, but they also had the advantage of learning ranching, animal husbandry and management of a small business. They would have the opportunity, as well, to learn horsemanship and cowboyin’. Warm summer nights sleeping on the screened porch, the smells of Mom’s good home cooking, the sound of cicadas, water from the well, and Christmas around the old stone fireplace, all make for good memories and good character.” John

"As we were looking around I noticed a fascinating little road, almost a trail, just off the highway. I suggested we drive down this storybook looking road. This little trail of a bumpy road took us right into the driveway of what became RAVENSTRACK. I sat calmly in the car while John took a walk around and an overwhelming feeling of being home in this beautiful but starkly bare old adobe home captivated me. The beginning of a wonderful story!" -Thea

“Yesterday, I did a painting. Today, I did a Farnsworth! There’s an old saying, it takes two to paint a watercolor, one to paint it, and one to tell him when to stop! Well, that often holds true when painting in oils, as well.

I was not quite satisfied with yesterday’s painting, but felt it was time to stop. Then, as I was shutting down my research, I noticed another image that, with some careful cropping would suggest the painting I would have preferred to have done.

I could hardly wait to get to this one. I think I even dreamed about it last night. I know it was in my thoughts all day as I worked on other things. When, finally, I got started, it went as smoothly and easily as very few do.

They are all fun. Not many are this much fun.” John (original caption)
