On December 31, 1999, I sat on my back porch with a Radio Shack DX-392 shortwave radio in my lap waiting for Y2K.

I'm not kidding.

I'd been paying attention to Y2K for a long time. I'd read the newsletters, listened to the radio, followed what was happening, prepared for it, and somewhere along the way I had convinced myself there was at least a reasonable chance that when midnight started rolling across the time zones, we were going to hear about some serious problems.

So there I sat.

The interesting thing about shortwave was that I didn't have to wait until midnight in South Carolina. Midnight was happening somewhere else in the world all day long, and I could listen.

And I did.

Then midnight finally came to us.

The lights stayed on.

The world didn't end.

The computers didn't all spontaneously combust.

And life went on.

I can laugh about sitting there with that radio now, but I don't really make fun of that younger version of myself. He was trying to take care of his wife and family with the information he had. Some of the preparation was reasonable. Some of the fear probably wasn't.

It took me a lot longer than that night to learn the difference.

Twenty-seven years later, I still believe families should prepare.

I just don't believe fear deserves a seat at the head of the table.

Here's my yearly reminder of what a technician class amateur radio operator who has a thumb drive with his operating software in his pocket can do to assist humanity during a disaster....

Providential timing.

A dead tree came down just minutes before Car 90 drove by.

He was able to call it in to , which brought a quick response from Trinity 405 and two of our brush trucks out of Glenn Springs–Pauline.

was notified and had crews on scene in under 30 minutes to clear it.

Good example of how multiple agencies working together can keep something small from turning into a much bigger problem.
